THIS VOLUME contains a selection of articles by Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada on subjects of general cultural interest. The majority of the papers were presented at the annual meeting of the Society in 1956, but for the first time in the history of the Society, they are being issued in a volume available to the general public, instead of being restricted to the Society's Transactions. It has long been a cause for regret to many who were aware of the stimulating and authoritative nature of many Royal Society papers on generalized topics that they were not readily available to the general reader. This volume is an effort on the part of the Society to broaden its influence, to share with educated readers everywhere the contributions which its Fellows make to literary and scientific thought. Authors and articles are as follows: Pierre Daviault, "Franҫais et anglais du Canada"; Desmond Pacey, "The Canadian writer and his public, 1882-1952"; Northrop Frye, "Preface to an uncollected anthology"; Jacques Rousseau, "L'Indien de la forêt boréale, élément de la formation écologique"; W. H. Watson, "Perspective towards the future in physics"; Vincent Bladen, "Some reflection on the classical literature of political economy"; T. A. Goudge, "Progress and evolution"; J. S. Thomson, "The existential philosophy"; Pierre Dansereau, "Language, communication, and culture"; Henry Alexander, "Breaking the language barrier"; Jean-Charles Falardeau, "L'Importance des langues secondes et les sciences de l'homme."

This is the second volume in a series on wide-ranging topics relating to objects in the Antiquities collection of the Getty Museum. It consists of seven articles in English, German, and Italian. Chronologically ranging from Pier Giovanni Guzzo's presentation of two early sixth-century-B.C. silver cups to a technical analysis by Maya Elston and Jeffrey Maish of a rare late-antique wooden sarcophagus from Egypt. Despoina Tsiafakis discusses a South Italian bronze askos in the shape of a siren, and Gina Salapata analyzes a pair of South Italian terra-cotta arulae. As a companion text to his publication of an important jewelry assemblage in Greek Gold from Hellenistic Egypt (see p. 13), Michael Pfrommer presents an in-depth scholarly interpretation of the jewelry. Janet Burnett Grossman has compiled a catalogue of portraits of Alexander the Great in various media from the Getty Museum; and two life-size bronze portraits of delicati, thought to be from Gaul, are the topic of John Pollini's detailed discussion.

AT ITS ANNUAL MEETING in 1957, the Royal Society of Canada, celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of its foundation, departed from the accustomed pattern of its meetings. Instead of assembling in separate sections, Fellows from each Section of the Society were asked to contribute to a conspectus, focused by their specialized knowledge and trained discrimination, to reveal to the Society and to others certain trends and tendencies in Canada. Subjects and contributors are: "These Seventy-Five Years" (Presidential Address by W. A. Mackintosh); "The Roles of the Scientist and the Scholar in Canada's Future" (W. A. Mackintosh, David L. Thomson); "The Penalties of Ignorance of Man's Biological Dependence" (E. G. D. Murray, K. W. Neatby, I. McT. Cowan, G. H. Ettinger, R. H. Manske); "The Social Impact of Modern Technology" (N. A. M. MacKenzie, V. W. Bladen, E. W. R. Steacie, W. H. Watson); "Our Economic Potential in the Light of Science" (H. C. Gunning, J. E. Hawley, L. M. Pidgeon, B. S. Keirstead, Maurice Lamontagne); "Human Values and the Evolution of Society" (G.-H. Lévesque, T. W. M. Cameron, A. S. P. Woodhouse, R. Elie, Roy Daniells); "Let Us Look to Our Human Resources" (F. H. Underhill, J. K. W. Ferguson, L.-P. Dugal, W. B. Lewis). The volume is further prefaced by the address given by His Excellency the Right Honourable Vicent Massey, Governor-General of Canada, "The Weighing of Ayre."

Real-Variable Methods in Harmonic Analysis deals with the unity of several areas in harmonic analysis, with emphasis on real-variable methods. Active areas of research in this field are discussed, from the Calderón-Zygmund theory of singular integral operators to the Muckenhoupt theory of Ap weights and the Burkholder-Gundy theory of good ? inequalities. The Calderón theory of commutators is also considered. Comprised of 17 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the pointwise convergence of Fourier series of functions, followed by an analysis of Cesàro summability. The discussion then turns to norm convergence; the basic working principles of harmonic analysis, centered around the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition of locally integrable functions; and fractional integration. Subsequent chapters deal with harmonic and subharmonic functions; oscillation of functions; the Muckenhoupt theory of Ap weights; and elliptic equations in divergence form. The book also explores the essentials of the Calderón-Zygmund theory of singular integral operators; the good ? inequalities of Burkholder-Gundy; the Fefferman-Stein theory of Hardy spaces of several real variables; Carleson measures; and Cauchy integrals on Lipschitz curves. The final chapter presents the solution to the Dirichlet and Neumann problems on C1-domains by means of the layer potential methods. This monograph is intended for graduate students with varied backgrounds and interests, ranging from operator theory to partial differential equations.

Private associations organized around a common cult, occupation, ethnic identity, neighborhood or family were among the principal means of organizing social and economic life in the ancient Mediterranean. They offered opportunities for sociability, cultic activities, mutual support and contexts in which to display and recognize virtuous achievement. This volume collects 140 inscriptions and papyri from Ptolemaic and early Roman Egypt, along with translations, notes, commentary, and analytic indices. The dossier of association-related documents substantially enhances our knowledge of the extent, activities, and importance of private associations in the ancient Mediterranean, since papyri, unavailable from most other locations in the Mediterranean, preserve a much wider range of data than epigraphical monuments. The dossier from Egypt includes not only honorific decrees, membership lists, bylaws, dedications, and funerary monuments, but monthly accounts of expenditures and income, correspondence between guild secretaries and local officials, price and tax declarations, records of legal actions concerning associations, loan documents, petitions to local authorities about associations, letters of resignation, and many other papyrological genres. These documents provide a highly variegated picture of the governance structures and practices of associations, membership sizes and profiles, and forms of interaction with the State.
