Who has not, in a favored moment, ‘stolen the limelight’, whether inadvertently or by design? The implications of such an act of display – its illicitness, its verve, its vertiginous reversal of power, its subversiveness – are explored in this book. Narrative crafting and management of such scenarios are studied across canonical novels by Gide, Colette, Mauriac, and Duras, as well as by African Francophone writer Oyono and detective novelist Japrisot. As manipulated within narrative, acts of display position a viewer or reader from whom response (from veneration or desire to repugnance or horror) is solicited; but this study demonstrates that display can also work subversively, destabilising and displacing such a privileged spectator. As strategies of displacement, these scenarios ultimately neutralise and even occult the very subject they so energetically appear to solicit. Powered by gendered tensions, this dynamic of display as displacement works toward purposes of struggle, resistance or repression.

The stolen base is one of the most fascinating plays in all of sports. In no other sport is the opportunity present for the offense to literally take away what belongs to the defense. In other sports it is the ball (or puck) that must do the scoring; in baseball, however, it is the runner, and base stealing is the runner's greatest weapon. Not just ball games but entire World Series have turned on a steal. This book traces the history of the stolen base and stealing in the major leagues from its humble beginnings through its current status as an indispensable part of a team's offense. Also covered are the players who were synonymous with base stealing: Ty Cobb, Luis Aparicio, Maury Wills, Lou Brock, Rickey Henderson, and others. The most memorable steals in baseball history are also recalled.

A grisly quadruple slaying drags Marian Larch into a shadowy government cover-up Marian Larch is tired of murder. This NYPD veteran has seen the worst the city has to offer, and she’s not sure she can stand another day. Temporarily assigned to the chaotic Ninth Precinct, Larch is saddled with a callous lieutenant and a partner who can’t stand working with a woman. Just coming to work every day is becoming a trial—but it’s about to get a whole lot worse. In the concrete jungle of Alphabet City, East River Park is a rare strip of green. When four well-dressed men are found there, handcuffed together and shot through their eyes, it’s up to Larch to find their killer. They were employees of a top-flight tech firm with ties to the US government, and their deaths were meant as a warning. But who was the warning intended for? Answering that question will show Larch that as rotten as the Big Apple can be, it has nothing on Washington. You Have the Right to Remain Silent is the 4th book in the Marian Larch Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Written by a Sydney native, English, The Aussie Way: A Fun Guide to Australia’s Colourful Phrases, Words, and Expressions offers an amusing way for English or non-English speakers around the world to learn the colloquial phrases for which Australia is famous. This user-friendly reference provides words/phrases and meanings/synonyms by using an example sentence. Says the author, “For seven years I housed international students who were attending English language schools in Sydney, and I realised that although they had a good grasp of formal grammar, they struggled to understand not only colloquial English, but many of the commonly used phrasal verbs, which could not be found in a standard English/Spanish, French, etc., dictionary. It was then that I decided to start writing some of them down for future reference and it grew from there.”
