Excerpt from Steps of Belief James freeman clarke, a grand son_, through his mother, of the first avowed Unitarian minister in the United States, is, if not the most learned and gifted, at least among the most earnest, industrious, ener getic, and influential of contempo rary Unitarian ministers. He has a mind of singular comprehensiveness, and as open to the reception of er ror as to the reception of truth. He is an eclectic, or, rather, a syncretist, and holds it his duty to accept all opinions, whether true or false, as equally respectable. As a Unitarian, he comprehends both wings of the denomination, accepts both extremes, without troubling himself about the middle term that unites them. He is rarely impressed with the impor tance of logical consistency, and feels no difficulty in maintaining that, of two contradictory propositions, both are true, or both are false. Excerpt from The Foundations of Faith, Vol. 37 Thus the history of the problem in modern times shows a great variety of views concerning the nature and'analy sis of belief. It also reveals the fact that some of the major problems of belief are not carefully differentiated. For example, the ground of belief, or that upon which the belief is established, or built up, is not clearly distinguished from the actual state or process of belief. Another aspect of the same problem is what we may call the logic as Opposed to the psychology of belief. The validity of a belief is one consideration as it is judged by certain standards of truth, but the psychologist is not concerned with this. His interest is iii-analysing thestate or process into its elements. The more recent social psychologists have pointed out the importance of social influence in the making and establishing of belief, and this is a timely emphasis, as it seems to have been over looked by many writers. Moreover, the wide range of the meanings of belief has never been adequately set forth. Belief, Credulity, Confidence and Faith are terms frequently found in literature, and yet a differentiation of the use of these terms in the wide range of the subject is lacking. It seems necessary, there fore, to set to work on a classification of belief, both as to Grounds and Processes, in order to show the wide range of the subject, to attempt to clear up some of the difficulties in the use of terms, and to make distinctions which seemed to be lacking in many treatises on the subject. My thanks are due particularly to Professor G. S. Brett. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from What I Believe and Why I Believe It No attempt was made to formulate doctrines. Spiritual truth is apprehended not by elaborat ing theologies but in living. At the same time due respect was paid to the religious convictions of all men. There are great fundamental truths that all devout men, of whatever race or creed, believe in, and these are the truths that are sought and emphasized. Stick to the fundamentals and you will not quarrel with anyone. There was no desire to preach a new gospel, declare a new philosophy, or propagate new theories. In fact, the purpose of the addresses was not so much to inform the minds of the hearers as to clarify their ideals, quicken their moral life and inspire their spiritual aspirations. One word of explanation. Concerning the speaker may be permitted. He is not a minis ter in a professional sense. As a certified public accountant he has a part in the busy world of affairs and steps to his Sunday plat form, not from study and ministerial confer ence, but from counting room and business Of fice. He knows at first hand the temptations, doubts, discouragements and weaknesses of the man in the street and his addresses are wrought out in the hot fires of commercial struggle and business rivalries. This fact may account for his slight regard for speculation and theology, and his emphasis upon the practical phases of religious life and belief. Excerpt from Belief T is said that the block of marble from which Michael Angelo called forth his mighty statue of David, had been brought to Florence for another purpose. Some earlier artist had designed another subject for it, and failed in the attempt to realize it. But An gelo, -seeing the big block and noting its con tour and inclination, foresaw the heroic figure imprisoned there, and released him with blow on blow of his redeeming mallet. Excerpt from The Great Step This little book has been prepared especially for my own congregation, that those who unite with the Church may have a clear apprehension of the importance of the step which they are taking, and that those who have been Christians for a longer time may be helped in their preparation to worthily partake of the Lord's Supper. I have ventured to print several prayers, more as suggestions than as forms to be used. I have appended a number of condensed sacramental addresses for devotional reading before Communion. I hope that in addition to its work among my own people it may be a help to pastors and sessions in their responsible task of receiving into the visible Church such as shall "Confess with their mouth the Lord Jesus."
