I could see a carpet of twinkling lights from the ack ack all along the rail sidings which bordered the canal. I dove onto these with my cannons going. Then suddenly, when the attention of all the guns turned on me, I realized how foolhardy I was being. I ran the guns along the row of rail trucks--opened the throttle wide and pulled straight up for the clouds--with tracers crossing in front and on all sides of the plane. Ron Pottinger started the war as a rifleman in the Royal Fusiliers, then transferred to the Royal Air Force, where he began flying the 7.5-ton Hawker Typhoon. He flew dozens of dangerous ground attack missions over occupied Europe through bad weather, heavy flak, and enemy fighters before being shot down and taken prisoner.

Russians arrived in the night. Tanks came through the wire... On the night of the 23rd August 1943 Halifax H.R. 846 of 35 P.F.F. Squadron was attacked by a German J.U. 88 night figher over Berlin. The wireless operator of that Halifax bomber managed to escape from the burning aircraft and parachute into a built up area of the city where he was captured. The main aircrew P.O.W. camp Stalag Luft III was full so the surviving members of the crew were sent to Stalag IVB, a camp controlled by the German army. This book is the true story of the lives of Royal Air Force aircrew prisoners in Stalag IVB from 1943 to 1945. It tells how they managed to survive and support each other through the hardships and deprivation. In 1945 many hundreds of American troops joined them after their capture at the Battle of Ardennes. They were set free by the arrival of Russian tanks when they ploughed through the barbed wire on the night of April 20th 1945.

And now the untried captain and his misfit crew must take on a powerful alien race devoted to the obliteration of the human "cancer." With tension, unrest, and mutiny brewing dangerously all around him, Endicott faces the deadliest challenge he has ever known. Because the cutthroats riding the Endeavor into the enemy's turf for a war to the death are the only champions courageous -- and foolhardy -- enough for the mission. And they have nothing in the universe left to lose . . .
