Excerpt from Stage Decoration in France, in the Middle Ages In order to fill the' lacunae in the history of stage setting, plays must be utilized which give little or even no hint Of their scenery in stage directions, such as the Miracles de N otre Dame and practically all profane plays. How are we to gain information in regard to the setting of such plays, if stage directions are lacking? There is but one way: the lines themselves must furnish the desired evidence. This method, therefore, whether it be considered good or bad, must be accepted if one wishes to carry investi gations of the subject farther than they have reached at present. The question must be de cided whether these plays without stage direc tions were also without scenery; and if they had scenery, it must be reconstructed. Excerpt from The French Theatre of the Middle Ages: Thesis The next step in the progress of the theatre was the Mystere d' Adam, a drama about idam, Eve, Cain, Abel etc., in which the characters were remarkably well depicted. The theatre became increasingly profane, a natural consequence of the vulgarity of the people. The use of Latin waned, and the vulgar language was employed in all plays, save the liturgical drama. The ingenious art exhibited in the mechanical effects on the stage of the Middle Ages was truly remarkable.
