Excerpt from Some Observations on the Status of Cuba The status of Cuba since the ratification of the Treaty of Paris is anomalous, and viewed as a whole it might be called unique, could this distinction be safely applied to any political condition. Excerpt from History of Cuba: Or, Notes of a Traveller in the Tropics, Being a Political, Historical, and Statistical Account of the Island, From Its First Discovery to the Present Time The remarkable degree of interest expressed on all sides, at the present time, relative to the island of Cuba, has led the author of the following pages to place together in this form a series of notes from his journal, kept during a brief residence upon the island. To these he has prefixed a historical glance at the political story of Cuba, that may not be unwor thy of preservation. The fact that the subject-matter was penned in the hurry of observation upon the spot, and that it is thus a simple record of what would be most likely to engage and interest a stranger, is his excuse for the desultory character of the work. So critically is the island now situated, in a political point of view, that ere this book shall have passed through an edition, it may be no longer a dependency of Spain, or may have become the theatre of scenes to which its former convulsions shall bear no parallel. Excerpt from The Law and Policy of Annexation: With Special Reference to the Philippines Together With Observations on the Status of Cuba The annexation of the Philippines is the immediate reason for this book, which, in dealing with the event itself, advocates withdrawal of our sovereignty from the islands, and suggests a method for its accomplishment. In the larger and permanent purpose of the book the event is but the text for a general discussion of annexation, with regard to the policies proper for the guidance of the United States in the matter of enlarging their territory, and to the obligations that go with their sovereignty. These obligations are partly of a moral nature, and partly are determined by the Constitution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Island of Cuba That portion of Baron Humboldt's Personal Narrative of his travels with Mons. Bonpland in the equinoctial regions of America, which relates to the Island of Cuba, has been published as a separate work both in the French and Spanish languages; but I believe no complete version has ever been presented in English. The following translation is from an excellent rendering of the original work into Spanish, which modestly gives only the initials of the translator; D. J. B. De V. Y. M. I have been stimulated to undertake this labor by the oft-repeated request that I would state which is the best book on Cuba, and by the fact that a long continued residence in the island, and a study of its condition and resources, have convinced me that Baron Humboldt's work is the best that has been written on the subject. In order to bring the information in this volume as nearly as possible down to the present time, I have added notes, which are placed in brackets in the body of the text, or without signature at the foot of the page, as seemed most conducive to a clear exposition of the present condition of Cuba. The notes of Baron Humboldt have the signature H. Affixed in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
