The material in this work is focused on recent developments in research into the stress-strain behavior of geomaterials, with an emphasis on laboratory measurements, soil constitutive modeling and behavior of soil structures (such as reinforced soils, piles and slopes). The latest advancements in the field, such as the rate effect and dynamic behavior of both clay and sand, behavior of modified soils and soil mixtures, and soil liquefaction are addressed.

This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

The Aerospace Nuclear Safety Program at Sandia Corporation requires an independent assessment of the safety of all nuclear power supplies used in aerospace under all conditions from factory shipment through re-entry from space. The effects of impact against any point on the earth by a nuclear power supply or its components must be evaluated as part of this assessment. This report: (1) evluates the fundamental mechanisms involved in soil impacts by cylindrical projectiles with velocities of 500-700 feet per second; (2) defines the problem of specifying impact targets which closely simulate various portions of the earth's surface; and (3) describes an analytical and experimental program intended to obtain the information needed to properly specify a simulated earth target for use in Aerospace Nuclear Safety impact tests.
