What Is Solid State Transformer In actuality, an AC-to-AC converter, also known as a solid-state transformer (SST), power electronic transformer (PET), or electronic power transformer, is a type of electric power converter that replaces a conventional transformer in AC electric power distribution. This type of electric power converter is known as an AC-to-AC converter. Because it works at a higher frequency, this kind of transformer is more complicated than a traditional transformer that uses the utility frequency, but it also has the potential to be more space-efficient and smaller than a traditional transformer. The two primary varieties are referred to as "real" AC-to-AC converters and AC-to-DC-to-DC-to-AC converters, respectively. The AC-to-AC converter or DC-to-DC converter that is often found inside of a solid-state transformer is really a transformer. This transformer is what provides the electrical isolation and carries the entire power. This transformer is more compact because the DC-DC inverting stages that occur between the transformer coils are on the smaller side. As a result, the transformer coils that are needed to step up or step down voltages are also on the smaller side. Active regulation of voltage and current may be performed via a solid-state transformer. There are several that are able to convert electricity from single-phase to three-phase and vice versa. The amount of conversions that need to take place may be decreased by having variations that can either input or output DC power. This results in increased end-to-end efficiency. A Modular Solid-state transformer is similar to a Multi-level converter in that it is made up of numerous high-frequency transformers and has the same function. Because it is an intricate electrical circuit, it has to be constructed such that it can survive surges of various kinds, such as lightning. The solid-state transformer is a relatively new kind of transformer. This book is based on the author's 50+ years experience in the power and distribution transformer industry. The first few chapters of the book provide a step-by-step procedures of transformer design. Engineers without prior knowledge or exposure to design can follow the procedures and calculation methods to acquire reasonable proficiency necessary to designing a transformer. Although the transformer is a mature product, engineers working in the industry need to understand its fundamentals oand design to enable them to offer products to meet the challenging demands of the power system and the customer. This book can function as a useful guide for practicing engineers to undertake new designs, cost optimization, design automation etc., without the need for external help or consultancy. The book extensively covers the design processes with necessary data and calculations from a wide variety of transformers, including dry-type cast resin transformers, amorphous core transformers, earthing transformers, rectifier transformers, auto transformers, transformers for explosive atmospheres, and solid-state transformers. The other subjects covered include, carbon footprint salculation of transformers, condition monitoring of transformers and design optimization techniques. In addition to being useful for the transformer industry, this book can serve as a reference for power utility engineers, consultants, research scholars, and teaching faculty at universities.

A solid-state transformer (SST) is a power electronics converter that converts high voltage alternating current to low voltage alternating current and it aims to replace conventional 60 Hz power transformers. The SST has been regarded as one of the most emerging technologies in power distribution systems. Transferring energy through a high-frequency transformer with power electronics brings SST advantages of low volume, low weight, fault isolation, and potential additional functions, such as voltage regulation, harmonic filtering, reactive power compensation, etc. However, the involvement of a large number of power devices makes the control of an SST a challenge. In addition, the high voltage and high-power hardware design of the SST are not easy. To resolve these issues, this research seeks to develop a modular solid-state transformer (MSST). Specifically, the overall SST system is built by multiple identical isolated AC/AC converter modules connected in an input-seriesoutput-parallel configuration. Also, a distributed control algorithm has been developed for MSST to further increase modularity. The proposed solution of SST significantly reduced the overall system complexity and cost. Compared to previous research on SST, MSST improves both conversion efficiency and power density. The modular architecture allows more flexibility on converter module design optimization. Therefore, optimization of the isolated DC/DC converter stage is studied in this research. The hardware implementation and a distributed control algorithm will be illustrated in detail. Simulation and experiment results will be shown to demonstrate the feasibility and performance of MSST

Describing the fundamental physical properties of materials used in electronics, the thorough coverage of this book will facilitate an understanding of the technological processes used in the fabrication of electronic and photonic devices. The book opens with an introduction to the basic applied physics of simple electronic states and energy levels. Silicon and copper, the building blocks for many electronic devices, are used as examples. Next, more advanced theories are developed to better account for the electronic and optical behavior of ordered materials, such as diamond, and disordered materials, such as amorphous silicon. Finally, the principal quasi-particles (phonons, polarons, excitons, plasmons, and polaritons) that are fundamental to explaining phenomena such as component aging (phonons) and optical performance in terms of yield (excitons) or communication speed (polarons) are discussed.
