This research investigates the role of meaningful aromas through a hermeneutical intersection of the natural sciences, philosophy, and depth psychology. Part 1 analyzes how fragrances can be constructed as psychic images. Following Jung, perceptual images are differentiated from memory images. Four qualities necessary for the formation of scent images are then identified: evocative, idiosyncratic, emotional, and adherence. Part 2 discusses more specifically the factors involved in the formation of meaningful aromas. Beginning with the need for adequate olfactory language, the role of breath, aesthetics, memory, and the imagination, placed within the context of a particular scent experience are outlined. The final part of the research explores the psyche’s reflective process regarding meaningful scent images and the psychological implications derived from this experience. Following the work of Hillman and Berry, two styles of reflection are proposed: zooming in and zooming out. The body’s role in the reflective process and the self-knowledge derived from attending to somatic sensations is then discussed. The findings reveal that meaningful scent images could be harnessed to improve psychological health by providing emotional fulfillment, a stronger sense of identity, and greater self-knowledge. The results suggest that scent imagery could be used in clinical applications to foster self-esteem and strengthening one’s sense of life continuity.

Join Lizzie Ostrom on an olfactory adventure as she explores the trends and crazes that have shaped the way we’ve spritzed. One hundred perfumes and scents in all their fragrant glory reveal a fascinating social history of the past century. From the belle epoque through the swinging sixties, to the naughty nineties and beyond, Ostrom brings intelligence and wit to this most ravishing of subjects. There was the patriotic impact of English Lavender during World War I and perfumes that captured the Egyptomania of the 1920s. Estee Lauder created "Youth Dew" and with it, distilled the essence of 1950's suburbia. Patchouli oil—the "anti-perfume" of the 1960s—was sure to keep money out of the hands of corporations and "the man." And who could forget the fervor created by the grunge androgyny of CK One? Scent is truly the passport to memory, making Perfume both a lush treat and an insightful examination of the twentieth century through the most mysterious of the five sense.

Michael Blekhman's novel "Reflection" describes three generations of people living in the Soviet Union in the 20s, 30s, 40s of the XX century, as well as in a Jewish village Rechitsa in Belarus, in the XIX century. The novel is focused on a young couple, Klara Stolberg and Samuil Blekhman, their relatives and friends. The author and his characters seek to answer the central questions of human life. Together with them, Blekhman is reflecting on whether human beings can be happy, retain their individuality, be loved and love, dream and make their most cherished wishes come true despite all the tragic problems, which may seem insurmountable to the present generation. Blekhmn shows Klara and Samuil growing up, the boy becoming a man, and the girl turning into a woman, enjoying things that may seem not very important to others, but are quite significant to them. At the beginning of the novel, the female protagonist of the novel, Klara, who is 9 years old at that time, comes across an enigmatic line in a collections of poems by Alexander Pushkin: No happiness exists, just force of will and peace. In fact, Blekhman's novel is an attempt to answer the question, “Does happiness exist?” Together with his characters, the author answers, “Yes, it definitely does!”

2019 Best Book Awards, Finalist: Religion--Christian Inspirational If you've already figured out your life and feel totally complete, then this book may not be for you. But if you are like the rest of us, every day presents a mountain of to-do items, jobs to go to, errands to run, projects to complete, meals to cook, children to raise... You forge ahead and get it done, but you know that things aren't as they should be. Even when you check every item off your daily list, you still feel as though something meaningful and essential is missing from the very center of your life. Spiritual director and writer Becky Eldredge has felt that same longing, and she knows what people are missing--a relationship with God through prayer. In Busy Lives & Restless Souls, Eldredge interprets principles of Ignatian spirituality in a fresh way to equip us with prayer tools that are accessible and practical within the relentless realities of our daily routines. Just as important, she shows us how we can bring our relationship with God to life by becoming what St. Ignatius called "contemplatives in action." For all who sense that there is a missing peace in their lives, Busy Lives &Restless Souls will help them find it--right where they are.
