Blueprints for Tropical Dairy Farming provides insight into the logistics, infrastructure and management required for the development of small and large dairy farms in tropical developing countries. This book complements author John Moran’s five previous books on the principles of tropical dairy farming. While smallholder farms are the major suppliers of milk in the tropics, many larger farms are becoming established throughout the tropics to satisfy the increasing demands for fresh milk. Tropical Dairy Farming is a manual designed for use by dairy production advisors working in tropical areas, especially in South-East Asia. It aims to increase the productivity of small holder dairy farmers in the humid tropics by improving the feeding management of their livestock. It shows how to provide dairy cows with cost-effective feeds that match small holder farming systems and discusses the major obstacles to improving feeding management in the humid tropics. The author shows the benefits and drawbacks of various feed components and the calculation of balanced diets based mainly on forages combined with some supplementary feeding. Diseases and problems associated with unbalanced diets are also covered, as well as important information on growing and conserving quality forages as silage. The book draws on examples from a variety of countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, East Timor and the Philippines.

This paper looks at the gendered impacts of a development project that provided improved dairy cattle and training as part of a broader effort to develop a smallholder-friendly, market-oriented dairy value chain in Manica province, Mozambique. The project targeted households, registered cows in the name of the household head, and, initially, trained registered cow owners in various aspects of dairy production and marketing. Subsequently training was expanded to two members per household to increase the capacity within households to care for cows, a change which resulted in a significant number of women being trained. Using qualitative and quantitative data on dairy production and consumption and on gendered control over income and assets, the paper explores how men and women participated in and benefited from the project. We find that despite being registered to men, in practice dairy cattle are in some cases viewed as jointly owned by men and women. Beneficiary households dramatically increased dairy production and income, with men, women, and children all contributing labor. Women’s incentives for participation in dairy are less clear. Despite their recognized rights and responsibilities related to dairy cow management, women exercise relatively little control over milk and milk income as compared to men. Various explanations related to monetary and nonmonetary benefits of MSDDP and dairying for women are explored, along with their implications for women’s level of effort and overall project outcomes.

Despite the importance of dairy development to nutrition, health and income of rural communities, smallholder dairy performance is very low in the rural areas of northern Ethiopia. To enhance the performance of smallholders dairy development, an integrated and knowledge based interventions along the dairy value chain framework has been tested and promoted. Hence, a field study was conducted to assess the changes in response to the integrated interventions along the value chain of dairy production-marketing systems and to draw lessons for scaling out and up purposes. The changes associated with the interventions were systematically captured using household level surveys, key informant interviews and secondary sources. In the survey, key parameters and indicator variables that can indicate the changes in dairy performance along the value chain framework were collected and analyzed. The lessons and experiences gained give an insight into the approaches, procedures and processes of knowledge based interventions, and response monitoring in smallholder dairy enterprise. The lessons captured in smallholder dairy development are useful to development and research workers in the tropics.
