Excerpt from Sketches From Memory As to the illustrations, they are for the most part also sketches, shorthand notes from nature, or care ful studies for backgrounds of 'pictures, portraits, landscapes, figures, &c., which illustrate my story, and give relief, I hope, to the printed pages. And now, dear reader, I must leave my Sketches in your hands, and as they are written without malice, and, indeed, with the kindest motives, I trust you also will treat them with kindness. Excerpt from Memory Sketches These bits of life, picked up from the morning, are brief, simple memories. They are recorded now, in the hope that the men and women of the race may catch from them the joy of recognition. For it has come to me they will see in my Father John, a Father John of their own; in the Deel gliding past Athery and Creelabeg, a Deel making music elsewhere; in the hedge, the garden, the bogfield of my small world, a hedge, a garden, a bogfield in the world where their young lives were lived. I cannot tell you all the quiet comfort that has come to me following the unrecorded paths of our dear priest. That he is worthy a more ambitious chronicle, I well know; and that his unforgettable goodness did not appear to one of more temperament and seeing will always seem to me a loss. These bits, however, are given out of the unwritten, larger life of the man in the trust that they may edify and please. There is no attempt at analysis, no trying to present spiritual seeing and inwardness. Just what a country lad saw and heard as from afar. God rest Father John! He had the mind of a poet and the heart of a soggarth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Drawn From Memory: Containing Many of the Author's Famous Cartoons and Sketches John mccutcheon could remember me when I wasn't much more than a wide grin. He had, therefore, the advantage of me, because my first clear memory of him is on a June week end in 1902 when I hung over his shoulder while he drew pictures of me in assorted attitudes and riding on various animals. I was growing rather lanky by that time and he did not fail to record the fact. Whenever he was a guest at my parents' table, at Ragdale, I crept part-way down the stairs in my nightgown to peek into the dining room where I could watch him happily. Sometimes the whole family sat by the fire while he told tale after tale of his adventures. Especially I liked the one about the Sultan of Sulu. Later, at my urgent insistence after we were married, he began dico tating these adventures to me. Gradually, over the years, the Opus, as he called it, developed and expanded. But always there was something to hinder progress - some other deadline to meet, some other dream to be fulfilled. So it came about that the completion of the Opus was deferred too long. Excerpt from Pictures of Memory It is my hope that the contents of this little volume may touch the heart of the man or woman whose childhood days are worthy of remembrances - that while reading you may live over again those happy hours which were so full of love and life in their true sense; although to you they may have seemed crowded with disappointments and heart aches. Then, as now, it took Breakers to develop a keen appreciation of the joy that was ours, and prepare for the mixture of happiness and sorrow that comes into every life that is made worth living. Excerpt from Tales, Sketches and Poems: A Memorial Volume To all of us she is a most tender memory; and although the pleasure of reading this book will be sad dened by the recollection that I have lost her who wrote it, it will now and then serve to put me in mind of her as I knew her in the sunshine of that life, upon whose brightness the night of death came all too soon.
