This Proceedings volume contains 14 papers from the symposium ''Siliceous, Phosphatic and Glauconitic Sediments of the Tertiary and Mesozoic'', which was held during the 29th International Geological Congress, Kyoto, Japan, 24 August--3 September, 1992. The first part of this volume consists of papers dealing with Tertiary biosiliceous sediments of the Pacific Rim, starting in the northwest. The second part of the volume is composed of papers dealing with Tertiary and Mesozoic phosphatic rocks and phosphatebearing sequences, in particular of the eastern Pacific Rim and the Middle East. The articles serve to emphasize the similarities and differences between the Pacific Neogene successions and the Tethyan Mesozoic sequences of the Middle East.

This textbook outlines the physical, chemical, and biologic properties of the major sedimentary rocks, as revealed by petrographic microscopy, geochemical techniques, and field study. It covers the mineralogy, chemistry, textures, and sedimentary structures that characterise sedimentary rocks, and relates these features to the depositional origin of the rocks and their subsequent alteration by diagenetic processes during burial. In addition to detailed sections on siliciclastic and carbonate rocks, it also discusses evaporites, cherts, iron-rich sedimentary rocks, phosphorites, and carbonaceous sedimentary rocks such as oil shales. This second edition maintains the comprehensive treatment of sedimentary petrography and petrology provided in the first edition, and has been updated with new concepts and cutting-edge techniques like cathodoluminescence imaging of sedimentary rocks and backscattered electron microscopy. It is ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in sedimentary petrology, and is a key reference for researchers and professional petroleum geoscientists.

Because of the biological origin of many siliceous deposits, their geochemical transformation in the marine environment, and their occurrence in many formations around the world, oceanographers, paleontologists, geologists, geochemists, and sedimentologists are working closely together to trace the evolution of such deposits. In this book, leading experts from all of these disciplines present new data on fine-grained deposits such as chert, primarily of the Tethys region but also of the Pacific. Much of the information presented here was gathered recently in coordinated international research projects and is made available in English for the first time.

Dennis Curry was a remarkable polymath and philanthropist, leading a double-life as one of the UK's most gifted amateur geologists, whilst at the same time being an extremely successful businessman (as Managing Director of Currys Ltd). This Festschrift, authored by friends and specialists from Britain and France, pays tribute to his often seminal research as well as exhibiting the wide range of his geological interest. It contains 12 chapters and covers several differing aspects of micropalaeontology (pteropods, diatoms and especially foraminifera), Strontium Isotope Stratigraphy, Hampshire Basin stratigraphy and palaeogeography, as well as major contributions on English Channel sedimentology and the great faunal turnover affecting mammals at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary. A scientific appreciation of Dennis Curry, "the professional amateur", with recollections of former colleagues at University College, London (where he was Visiting Professor), together with an assessment of the valuable collections he established and donated to The Natural History Museum, are also included. Copiously illustrated, this book is a must for all geologists.

Geological, geoenvironmental, and resource studies were completed to study a world-class phosphate ore in the Western US Phosphate Field. This integrated, multi-agency, multidisciplinary research emphasized: (1) Geological and geochemical baseline characterization of the deposit and associated rocks, (2) Delineation, assessment, and spatial analysis of phosphate resources and lands disturbed by mining, (3) Contaminant residence, reaction pathways, and environmental fate associated with the occurrence, development, and use of phosphate rock, and (4) Depositional origin and evolution of the Phosphoria Formation and deposit and geoenvironmental modeling.
