Once the province of a small group of theorists and researchers operating on the periphery of psychological science, gender research has charged into the psychological mainstream during the last two decades. In large measure, Janet T. Spence has been responsible for this transformation, challenging the traditional ideas of fundamental difference between men and women. The simple idea of difference, once used to rationalize prejudices and discrimination, has now been replaced by a complex, sophisticated awareness of how gender is constructed and maintained. This book explores new empirical work and theoretical models about the causes and consequences of constructing gender.

During the 1970s, J.T. Spence and her colleagues developed several psychological instruments that were to become the standards in the field. Using Spence's seminal work as a starting point, the distinguished contributors to this volume examine how gender defines male and female behaviors. This volume is divided into three parts: the genesis of gender research, the complexity of gender stereotypes, and the modern forms of sexism and their consequences. This book not only celebrates the increasingly sophisticated and nuanced theoretical models that have been created from Spence's work but also considers the state-of-the-art developments that have forced researchers to look more broadly at the theoretical models of gender. Patriarchy and Gender Stereotypes in the Contemporary World offers a thorough analysis of the stereotyping of women, particularly in organisations and higher education. The book considers both theoretical and empirical evidence and articulates the potential for transforming perceptions of women at work and in society, emphasising the importance of understanding the pictures created in our heads by gender stereotypes and their impact both positively and negatively on the status of women. In addition, the authors consider gender stereotypes from different countries and generations, providing a uniquely detailed description of how patriarchy operates across cultures and time. The book is a key textbook and research reference for students, researchers, policymakers, academicians, and activists working on gender studies.

In an advanced society like the U.S., where an array of processes work against gender inequality, how does this inequality persist? Integrating research from sociology, social cognition and psychology, and organizational behavior, Framed by Gender identifies the general processes through which gender as a principle of inequality rewrites itself into new forms of social and economic organization. Cecilia Ridgeway argues that people confront uncertain circumstances with gender beliefs that are more traditional than those circumstances. They implicitly draw on the too-convenient cultural frame of gender to help organize new ways of doing things, thereby re-inscribing trailing gender stereotypes into the new activities, procedures, and forms of organization. This dynamic does not make equality unattainable, but suggests a constant struggle with uneven results. Demonstrating how personal interactions translate into larger structures of inequality, Framed by Gender is a powerful and original take on the troubling endurance of gender inequality.

Were men the only hunters and producers of tools, art and innovation in prehistory? Were women the only gatherers, home-bound breeders and caregivers? Are all prehistoric female depictions mother goddesses? And do women and men have equal career chances in archaeology? To put it short, no. However, these are some of the gender stereotypes that we still encounter on a daily basis in archaeology from the way archaeologists interpret the past and present it to the general public to how they practice it as a profession.0This booklet is as a short but informative and critical response by archaeologists to various gender stereotypes that exist in the archaeological explanation of the past, as well as in the contemporary disciplinary practice. Gender and feminist archaeologists have fought for decades against gender stereotypes through academic writing, museum exhibitions and popular literature, among others. Despite their efforts, many of these stereotypes continue to live and even flourish, both in academic and non-academic settings, especially in countries where gender archaeology does not exist or where gender in archaeology is barely discussed. Given this context and the rise of far right or ultraconservative ideologies and beliefs across the globe, this booklet is a timely and thought-provoking contribution that openly addresses often uncomfortable topics concerning gender in archaeology, in an attempt to raise awareness both among the professionals and others interested in the discipline.0The booklet includes 24 commonly encountered gender stereotypes in archaeology, explained and deconstructed in 250 words by archaeologists with expertise on gender in the past and in contemporary archaeology, most of them being members of the Archaeology and Gender in Europe (AGE) Community of the European Association of Archaeologists.00In addition, the stereotypes are illustrated by Serbian award-winning artist Nikola Radosavljevic.

Pre-University Paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Maria-Ward-Gymnasium Augsburg, language: English, abstract: A woman rushes across the screen, cleaning the floor with the latest “turbo power 3” multifunction vacuum cleaner, feeds her baby with the new and improved baby formula and marvels at her almost blindingly clean dishes, then turns to the camera with a smile on her face that suggests she could not imagine a more satisfying life. This description might sound a little old fashioned and restricting, but it is commonly conveyed to us through advertising, even today. Is this truly the concept we have of modern women? Has not the women’s movement brought about more change than just in legal status? As advertising is one of the most powerful educational mediums in modern society, the image of women it conveys is not only quite interesting, but also of great importance. There is such an overload of advertising surrounding us; we’re bombarded daily with a vast amount on the radio, TV, online, on billboards, in magazines, even on the most common things like a pen—there is no way to escape its influence. Advertising’s key objective is making money; selling an image of perfection to consumers makes great business sense, because it sends people on a never-ending quest, trying to achieve the impossible, all the while spending endless amounts of money. Advertising does not only sell a product, but, through stereotyped characters, also provides us with an exemplary way of life. The concepts of beauty, love, and normalcy it promotes, might have changed in the course of 40 years, but the central message remains the same, “you have to buy this or otherwise you will be unacceptable”. It seems that in the 21st century, women’s emancipation is an issue that should long since have been checked off the list as accomplished. The great effect of the feminist movement, with better educated, working women, participating in every aspect of life, is undeniable, yet the influence it has had on advertising’s portrayal of women remains questionable. Have stereotypes been banished, did they evolved or maybe even stay the same? The focus is on the 1950s and the 1990s as representative decades for the pre-and post-feminist attitudes, in order to explore the truth of advertising and finally be able to answer the question: does advertising’s image of women match their place in society?
