As Christians, we know that we are new creations in Jesus. So we try to act differently, hoping this will make us more like Him. But changing our outward behavior doesn’t change our hearts. Only by God’s grace can we be transformed internally. Renovation of the Heart lays a biblical foundation for understanding what best-selling author Dallas Willard calls the “transformation of the spirit”—a divine process that “brings every element in our being, working from inside out, into harmony with the will of God.” This fresh approach to spiritual growth explains the biblical reasons why Christians need to undergo change in six aspects of life: thought, feeling, will, body, social context, and soul. Willard also outlines a general pattern of transformation in each area, not as a sterile formula but as a practical process that you can follow without the guilt or perfectionism so many Christians wrestle with. Don’t settle for complacency. Accept the challenge Renovation of the Heart offers to become an intentional apprentice of Jesus Christ, changing daily as you walk with Him.

This second book, Settling Hearts, is a continuation of the first, Searching Hearts. It, like the first, is fiction or fiction with a purpose as fellow author Hugh Tribbey stated at the authors' reception both he and author Vaughan attended during the centennial reunion of Phillips University Alumni and Friends Association in Enid, Oklahoma, in August 1907. The main characters of the first book are, in the second, older and some are married with children of their own. Some new characters help emphasize the developing unity of all world religions. One of the purposes of the book is to encourage world religions to unite in a faith that stems from their own cultures and religious backgrounds and centers in their firm belief in Jesus as the incarnation of the Spirit of Christ that inspired the development of all world religions. One other purpose is to help stir the hearts of people not affiliated with any world religion to faith by way of the faith-unity of all religions. It is probable that many fail to believe in Christ Jesus because of the different and often opposing beliefs held by those of the various denominations of Christendom. Jesus, in John 17:20-23, stressed the need for unity among His disciples so that the world would believe that He was sent from God as the eternal Christ loved by God. Similarly there is a need to help atheists, by unity of world religions, to have faith in the one God and Father of us all and to believe that the spiritual Christ of God dwelt on earth in the human person Jesus of Nazareth. Enjoy the heart-settling that comes from reading this book. In his second book, Settling Hearts, Ewel Vaughan once again takes us on a journey through the lives of his fictional characters. This time we follow along with characters as they experience end-time events in a contemporary and real world setting. Vaughan's interpretation of the prophetic symbols and images in the book of Revelation suggest that the end times may appear very different than previously thought, and that events signaling fulfillment of prophesy might not be easily recognized in today's world. He further proposes that greed may be the causative element that set in motion the chain of events leading to the end of the Christian era. The world is not without hope though. Despite the turmoil and upheaval, hope is alive through the unity that is available through Christ. Vaughan points us in the direction of Christ as the one truth, the unifying and connecting element. He addresses the diversity of world faiths and proposes that all religions and faiths can be brought together through Christ. He suggests that God is reconciling all people to Himself through Christ, and that Christ has been active in all religions and is the inspiration for the founding of the various faith systems and their sacred writings. Vaughan explains that his theories were formed through a method of combining critical inquiry and God inspired revelation. He encourages others to do the same, to seek out answers by questioning the heart and mind to come to a personal understanding of God. I have known my father-in-law, Ewel Vaughan, for more than half my life. Through the years I've had the privilege of hearing many of his beliefs, his own revealed truths, through sermons and over the dining room table. He has always inspired me by his unwavering search for truth, his open mind and his steadfast faith in a loving and forgiving God. He helped me to see that one doesn't have to subscribe to the beliefs and views handed to us. We can discover on our own, and in connection with God's Spirit, truths that are real and that speak to us personally. I am thrilled to see Ewel Vaughan's theories in print, and to know that they may similarly inspire others. Lesley Vaughan, freelance writer, Stillwater, Oklahoma.
