Excerpt from Selections From A. C. Swinburne The only selection from the poems of Swinburne hitherto available in England, was one made by watts-dunton in 1887. It consisted of pieces that appealed especially to his personal taste, and omitted many that have been recognized as among the best the poet ever wrote. It was not broadly charac teristic of Swinburne's many moods and variety of subjects, and it gave an impression of the nature of his genius which criticism has not confirmed. The publisher feels that the time has arrived when a new selection more representative of Swinburne should be provided, and he hopes that Mr. Gosse and Mr. Wise, who have edited this volume, will be found to have satisfied the reasonable requirements of all Swinburne lovers, also that their selection will prove so attractive to new readers that it will lead them to the completer editions of his works. Excerpt from The Works of Algernon Charles Swinburne: Poems The issuing of this edition of Swinbume in two volumes, one Poems and the other Tragedies, we feel is really needed. To get the author's works before this time meant either buying the American edition in eleven volumes or collecting the English edition, in more numerous volumes, at even greater expense. The works of all the other standard poets may be had in some compact form for library use, and Swin burne surely should not be neglected. This edition, with the exception of Rosamund, Balen, and a few minor poems, is com. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The effect must always be partly that of a translation even to those who are familiar with Greek religion; the words have a shade of the quality inseparable from a translation, whether it is or is not creative, for it is to be found in the Authorized Version of the Bible; the reader is a little confused and yet not unduly, when he hears of Artemis as a light for dead men and dark hours, of the fair-faced sun that kills the stars and dews and dreams and de solations of the night, for it is not English thus to collect four things of four different classes, each requiring a distinct change in the meaning of the verb which governs them all. Perhaps the reader at first accepts hidden and shown, and even the alternative pairs, roar and range, snow or sleep, favourable and fair, etc., as part of the foreignness. It does not decrease. It is not absent from. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
