Volume 1 of this special issue of Lithos, dedicated to Roger Clement, presents papers describing the geology and emplacement of several of the recently discovered kimberlites in northern Canada in which diamond mines are now operating. Other papers are concerned with the petrography, age of emplacement, geochemistry and petrogenesis of kimberlites from Canada and other worldwide localities.

Volume 2, dedicated to Barry Hawthorne, presents papers concerned with the genesis of eclogites, the mineralogy of diamond and its inclusions, exploration methods for kimberlite, the geochemistry of the upper mantle and the character of cratons.

The nature and origin of the small-scale volcanic systems, generally referred to as 'monogenetic', have enjoyed an elevated level of interest during the past decade. There has been recognition that their ostensibly simple volcano types are a window into the nature of explosive volcanism, landscape evolution and the processes of magma generation in the Earth’s upper mantle. In the past few years, major conferences have offered specialized technical sessions dealing with monogenetic volcanism and there have been thematic conferences, such as the IAVCEI International Maar Conference series, which have provided a focus for discussion of volcanological and geochemical aspects of small-scale basaltic volcanism. Many new aspects of monogenetic volcanism have emerged and have clearly demonstrated that this volcanism can be very complex on a fine scale. This book is a collection of papers arising from two recent Maar Conferences (the fifth in Queretaro Mexico and the sixth in Changchun, China) and serves as a snapshot of current research on monogenetic volcanism.

Phoscorites are dark, often very handsome, sometimes economically valuable, magnetite-apatite-silicate rocks, almost always associated with carbonatite. They are key to understanding the longstanding question of how carbonate and carbonate-bearing magmas rise to the crust and the Earths surface. Despite this, they have been given little attention; a search on geological literature databases will produce thousands of references to carbonatite (up to 4125 on Georef) but not more than thirty references to phoscorite. This book goes some way to redress this balance. Over recent years many European and North American scientists have studied Kola rocks in collaboration with Russian colleagues. The idea for this book came from one such project funded by the European organisation, INTAS (Grant No 97-0722). The Kola Peninsula is one of the outstanding areas in the World for the concentration and economic importance of alkaline rocks. However, Russian work on the Kola complexes is still relatively unknown and a particular aim of this book, as well as presenting current research, is to make this knowledge accessible to English language readers. A large exploration programme on Kola alkaline rocks was active from 1950 to 1990 and involved teams of geologists who studied many kilometres of drill core and carried out detailed mineralogical and petrological studies.

This bibliography on the water and geological information or Liberia was begun in 1995 as a request through the US Department or State by the Government or Liberia. It brings together selected citations from a variety of different cartographic, geographical, geological and hydrological resources and specialized library collections. Most of the citations have location information on where these items can be located and used on site, and either borrowed through inter-library loan or purchased through a commercial document delivery services.
