Marjorie Trumaine, a freelance indexer from rural North Dakota in the 1960s, risks her life to help local law enforcement track down a missing, disabled girl. Dickinson, North Dakota, 1965. It's a harsh winter, and freelance indexer Marjorie Trumaine struggles to complete a lengthy index while mourning the recent loss of her husband, Hank. The bleakness of the weather seems to compound her grief, and then she gets more bad news: a neighbor's fourteen-year-old disabled daughter, Tina Rinkerman, has disappeared. Marjorie joins Sheriff Guy Reinhardt in the search for the missing girl, and their investigation quickly leads to the shocking discovery of a murdered man near the Rinkermans' house. What had he been doing there? Who would have wanted him dead? And, above all, is his murder connected to Tina's disappearance? Their pursuit of answers will take Marjorie all the way to the Grafton State School, some six hours away, where Tina lived until recently. And the information she uncovers there raises still more questions. Will the murderer come after Marjorie now that she knows a long-hidden secret?

This book is an introduction to the language and standard proof methods of mathematics. It is a bridge from the computational courses (such as calculus or differential equations) that students typically encounter in their first year of college to a more abstract outlook. It lays a foundation for more theoretical courses such as topology, analysis and abstract algebra. Although it may be more meaningful to the student who has had some calculus, there is really no prerequisite other than a measure of mathematical maturity.

Lance Rips describes a unified theory of natural deductive reasoning and fashions a working model of deduction, with strong experimental support, that is capable of playing a central role in mental life. In this provocative book, Lance Rips describes a unified theory of natural deductive reasoning and fashions a working model of deduction, with strong experimental support, that is capable of playing a central role in mental life. Rips argues that certain inference principles are so central to our notion of intelligence and rationality that they deserve serious psychological investigation to determine their role in individuals' beliefs and conjectures. Asserting that cognitive scientists should consider deductive reasoning as a basis for thinking, Rips develops a theory of natural reasoning abilities and shows how it predicts mental successes and failures in a range of cognitive tasks. In parts I and II of the book, Rips builds insights from cognitive psychology, logic, and artificial intelligence into a unified theoretical structure. He defends the idea that deduction depends on the ability to construct mental proofs—actual memory units that link given information to conclusions it warrants. From this base Rips develops a computational model of deduction based on two cognitive skills: the ability to make suppositions or assumptions and the ability to posit sub-goals for conclusions. A wide variety of original experiments support this model, including studies of human subjects evaluating logical arguments as well as following and remembering proofs. Unlike previous theories of mental proof, this one handles names and variables in a general way. This capability enables deduction to play a crucial role in other thought processes, such as classifying and problem solving. In part III, Rips compares the theory to earlier approaches in psychology which confined the study of deduction to a small group of tasks, and examines whether the theory is too rational or too irrational in its mode of thought.

In March 2015, millions worldwide were captivated by news reports of the dramatic rescue of an 18-month old girl, Lily Groesbeck, who'd somehow survived fourteen hours in an overturned car, submerged in an icy-cold Utah river, after her mother apparently lost control of the vehicle. Police officers arrived at the scene and heard a woman's voice spurring them on: 'Please hurry, there isn't much time.' Yet, once the two victims were recovered, it was clear the voice could not have come from Lily's mother: she'd been killed on impact. How to explain this modern-day miracle? Ptolemy Tompkins, New York Times bestselling collaborator, with the help of responding officer, Tyler Beddoes will do just that. PROOF OF ANGELS will be the first mainstream trade book to effectively address a topic that has captivated individuals across cultures, age groups and religious beliefs for centuries. This deeply engaging, hard-hitting book is poised to do for angels what PROOF OF HEAVEN, the internationalbestseller by Eben Alexander on which Ptolemy Tompkins collaborated, did for Near Death Experiences. Tyler Beddoes' compelling story launches a sweeping inquiry into the evidence supporting the existence of spiritual beings. Weaving real-life stories into a rich narrative exploring the history, nature and significance of angels in our lives, this book will appeal to the enormous audience who have bought books such as PROOF OF HEAVEN. PROOF OF ANGELS is poised to join the ranks of major bestselling inspirationaltitles by offering readers not only a highly entertaining look into a universally fascinating topic but by also delivering afresh, well-constructed and deeply reassuring message: we are not alone.
