Some initial results based on 40-90 pb−1 of integrated luminosity from Run II are presented for searches for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model, conducted at the upgraded Tevatron CDF and D0 experiments.

The Run II era at Fermilab began in March 2001. Many changes to the accelerator complex were made to support the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider operation with peak luminosities of 2-4 x 1032 cm−2 s−1 while delivering greater than 5 fb−1 of integrated luminosity before the LHC begins its physics program. This report describes the current status of Run II operations and the machine performances needed to achieve the goals.

This Thesis describes the first measurement of, and constraints on, Higgs boson production in the vector boson fusion mode, where the Higgs decays to b quarks (the most common decay channel), at the LHC. The vector boson fusion mode, in which the Higgs is produced simultaneously with a pair of quark jets, provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the detailed properties of the Higgs, including the possibility of parity and CP violation, as well as its couplings and mass. It thus opens up this new field of study for precision investigation as the LHC increases in energy and intensity, leading the way to this new and exciting arena of precision Higgs research.

In this dissertation we present a search for the associated production of charginos and neutralinos, the supersymmetric partners of the Standard Model bosons. We analyze a data sample representing 745 pb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF experiment at the p{bar p} Tevatron collider. We compare the Standard Model predictions with the observed data selecting events with three leptons and missing transverse energy. Finding no excess, we combine the results of our search with similar analyses carried out at CDF and set an upper limit on the chargino mass in SUSY scenarios.

The recent observation of the Higgs boson has been hailed as the scientific discovery of the century and led to the 2013 Nobel Prize in physics. This book describes the detailed science behind the decades-long search for this elusive particle at the Large Electron Positron Collider at CERN and at the Tevatron at Fermilab and its subsequent discovery and characterization at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
