Susan P. Gantt, Ph.D., CGP, ABPP, is the Director of the Systems-Centered Training and Research Institute, a psychologist in private practice in Atlanta, and a faculty member in the Emory University School of Medicine. Yvonne Agazarian, Ed.D., FAGPA, CGP developed a theory of living human systems and its systems-centered practice and founded the Systems-Centered Training and Research Institute. She received the Group Psychologist of the year award from the American Psychological Association in 1997. As this book amply demonstrates, SCT has turned out to have powerful organizational applications. With its theory of living human systems rather than a separate theory of organizations or of organizational behavior, it uses concepts that easily map onto organizational life. It looks at systems as a whole but also in parts. It stresses the importance of understanding boundaries and contexts. It continually focuses on task, and, perhaps, most important of all, it offers a sophisticated understanding of roles, which includes work roles in organizations. It well may be, as more consultants working in organizations become more familiar with the concepts and methods SCT offers, the SCT approach will come to seem indispensable to the resolution of conflict. -Ken Eisold, Ph.D. Yvonne Agazarian has long been established as one of the major theoreticians within group and organizational psychology. In this book, she and Susan Gantt have gathered together enriching and stimulating papers within the SCT tradition with the aim of showing us how it works in practice. They have certainly succeeded. SCT is about creating a new culture in which both people and the aims of the organization are strengthened and supported. For those working with organizations, either as leaders or consultants, this book will prove to be a stimulating and reliable companion. -Christer Sandahl, Department of Learning, Informatics, Management and Ethics (LIME), Karolinska Institute, Stockholm

This is the first edited volume dedicated to both teachers and learners of second/foreign language (L2) pragmatics. It comprises a collection of studies that explore how teachers background and practices, and individual learners differences contribute to the teaching and learning of L2 pragmatics. Also included are chapters that present pedagogical approaches that bring teachers and learners together in action in the classroom setting. Written by an international team of experts, the volume examines the most relevant topics on instructional pragmatics in a variety of language contexts, including Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, Spain, the United States, and Vietnam. This global perspective represents a key contribution in the current increasingly multilingual and multicultural society. Taken together, the findings presented have diverse research and pedagogical implications, and provide new directions to explore L2 pragmatic competence. This innovative book will be a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students, as well as for language teachers and course developers.

If you haven't worked with T1 before, you could be in for an unpleasant surprise. If you have, you'll already know that T1, the current network standard for business and professional Internet access, is neither efficient, easy to use, nor particularly well-suited to data transmission. T1: A Survival Guide, a practical, applied reference on T1 data transport, is a life raft for navigating the shoals of a 40-year-old technology originally designed for AT&T's voice network.Throughout T1's long life, network administrators have mainly learned it by apprenticeship, stumbling on troubleshooting tidbits and filing them away until they were needed again. This book brings together in one reference the information you need to set up, test, and troubleshoot T1.T1: A Survival Guide covers the following broad topics: What components are needed to build a T1 line, and how those components interact to transmit data effectively How to use standardized link layer protocols to adapt the T1 physical layer to work with data networks How to troubleshoot problems and work with the telephone company, equipment manufacturers, and Internet service providers In spite of its limitations, T1 is a proven, reliable technology that currently meets the need for medium-speed, high reliability Internet access by institutions of many sizes, and it's likely to be around for a while. T1: A Survival Guide will take the guesswork out of using T1 as a data transport.
