Significantly revised and updated, the new 7th edition of School Health Policy and Practice provides pediatric health care professionals with guidelines for communicating with schools and developing health programs for school-aged children, with a focus on health and illness management as they relate to a child's educational problems and potential. Schools and Health is a readable and well-organized book on comprehensive school health programs (CSHPs) for children in grades K-12. The book explores the needs of today's students and how those needs can be met through CSHP design and development. The committee provides broad recommendations for CSHPs, with suggestions and guidelines for national, state, and local actions. The volume examines how communities can become involved, explores models for CSHPs, and identifies elements of successful programs. Topics include: The history of and precedents for health programs in schools. The state of the art in physical education, health education, health services, mental health and pupil services, and nutrition and food services. Information about the current status of state support for school health programs is provided in this report. A survey of state directors responsible for each school health area in the 50 states and District of Columbia yielded a response rate of 100 percent. Seven chapters cover state organization and coordination, personnel, and programming aspects of (1) school health instruction; (2) school health services; (3) the environment; (4) physical education; (5) food and nutrition services; (6) guidance and counseling; and (7) school psychological services. These guidelines and standards provide a framework for teachers, administrators, and policy makers in designing or selecting curricula, allocating instructional resources, and assessing student achievement and progress; provide students, families, and communities with concrete expectations for health education; and advocate for quality health education in schools, including primary cancer prevention for children and youth.
