Stuart Walker's intelligent, straightforward explanation of why wind behaves as it does and what it is likely to do next draws upon his sixty-plus years of sailing experience and his vast knowledge of meteorology. The Sailor's Wind first describes each aspect of wind behavior in context challenging readers to analyze wind flow as though they were experiencing it on the water then explains what principles determined the wind's behavior, using recent meteorological research, instrumented observations, and studies of computer models. This book enables sailors not only to understand the wind but also to harness it."

I am Mitchell, the grandson of the Reverend Dr. Matlin DeMarco. But you already know that. Meet Charlie and me—who we are, how we met, and what we have become to each other. Call me Pastor Mitch, as my congregation does. I will fill you in on all the unknown answers that have come up throughout the Twin Memoirs saga that were briefly dwelled upon. My thesis, before ordination by the seminary, will tell you of my belief system. I am a Gnostic Christian. I am a seeker of truth and knowledge and a follower of Jesus. I use the Bible as a reference book, not a statute of limitations as many Christian put upon themselves. Stay with me as the truth be told. In book 12 is the twenty lost years of Michael DeMarco’s life after death. I had finally met my granduncle as he shared with me story after story of how he came to terms with his new life in God after becoming a vampire of light. Yes, it is true. Anyone could swear like a sailor! Within the larger culture, sailors had pride of place in swearing. But how they swore and the reasons for their bad language were not strictly wedded to maritime things. Instead, sailor swearing, indeed all swearing in this period, was connected to larger developments. This book traces the interaction between the maritime and mainstream world in the United States while examining cursing, language, logbooks, storytelling, sailor songs, reading, images, and material goods. To Swear Like a Sailor offers insight into the character of Jack Tar - the common seaman - and into the early republic. It illuminates the cultural connections between Great Britain and the United States and the appearance of a distinct American national identity. The book explores the emergence of sentimental notions about the common man - through the guise of the sailor - appearing on stage, in song, in literature, and in images.
