Rutherford County residents participated in almost every major campaign of the war, including Pearl Harbor, the air offensive in Europe, and D-Day, and those on the home front did all they could to support the troops. These patriotic photographs-many of which were collected by the authors during personal interviews with local veterans and other dedicated residents-memorialize this proud county's service and commitment to the war effort.

John Cedric Spence (b. 1809) was born in Murfeesboro, Tennessee to John and Mary Chism Spence. He spent his early years in Murfeesboro and then was a businessman in Sommerville and Memphis for a short time. In 1849 he returned to Murfeesboro where he became an important business leader of the community. During the Civil War he spent numerous hours chronicalling the war in his diary.

Spartanburg County gave generously and selflessly to World War II. Local men and women participated in almost every significant engagement, in almost every imaginable capacity, and in every branch of service. Distinguishing themselves with bravery, dignity, and loyalty, county veterans received every commendation, including the Medal of Honor. At Pearl Harbor, Carpenter's Mate Wayne Alman Lewis and Seaman Vernon Russell White died on the USS Arizona and Fire Controlman First Class Hubert Paul Clement died on the USS Oklahoma. Such sacrifices continued from December 7, 1941, through 1945. At home, window banners displayed blue stars for each person who served in the military. Many of the stories of these heroes from Spartanburg County have never before been told.

Cleveland County, North Carolina, selflessly gave to World War II, with 6,500 people--more than 11% of the county's population at that time--taking part in the conflict. This rural county, which contributed almost double its share of service personnel, lost 190 fine young men--almost five times the expected casualties for a North Carolina county. Cleveland County residents participated in most significant engagements of the war, in every imaginable capacity, and in every branch of service--from the infantrymen, to the sailors, to the airmen, to the marines.
