Die eigentliche Fragestellung dieser Arbeit lautet: Was verbirgt sich hinter dem Phänomen, das die Autorin mit der Metapher der Körnigkeit benennt? Lassen sich schon auf der Systemebene verschiedene Stufen der Körnigkeit ausmachen, oder ergibt sich die Körnigkeit erst im Kontext? Ist Körnigkeit überhaupt eine lexikalische Kategorie eigener Art? Nur eines möchte man schon (...) als gewiß annehmen: Körnigkeit bzw. Granularität ist ein Phänomen, das sich vor allem im Verb manifestiert und über das Verb in den Text gelangt. Daher wird im Mittelpunkt der empirischen Untersuchungen zur Granularität das Verb stehen.

Language demonstrates structure while also showing considerable variation at all levels: languages differ from one another while still being shaped by the same principles; utterances within a language differ from one another while exhibiting the same structural patterns; languages change over time, but in fairly regular ways. This book focuses on the dynamic processes that create languages and give them their structure and variance. It outlines a theory of language that addresses the nature of grammar, taking into account its variance and gradience, and seeks explanation in terms of the recurrent processes that operate in language use. The evidence is based on the study of large corpora of spoken and written language, what we know about how languages change, as well as the results of experiments with language users. The result is an integrated theory of language use and language change which has implications for cognitive processing and language evolution.

Distribution of anaphora in natural language and the complexity of its resolution have resulted in a wide range of disciplines focusing their research on this grammatical phenomenon. It has emerged as one of the most productive topics of multi- and int- disciplinary research such as cognitive science, artificial intelligence and human language technology, theoretical, cognitive, corpus and computational linguistics, philosophy of language, psycholinguistics and cognitive psychology. Anaphora plays a major role in understanding a language and also accounts for the cohesion of a text. Correct interpretation of anaphora is necessary in all high-level natural language pr- essing applications. Given the growing importance of the study of anaphora in the last few decades, it has emerged as the frontier area of research. This is evident from the high-quality th submissions received for the 7 DAARC from where the 10 excellent reports on - search findings are selected for this volume. These are the regular papers that were presented at DAARC.

The central theme of this collection is the epistemological status of constraints and preferences in linguistics. The contributions focus mainly on phonology; one article deals explicitly with morphology. The approaches to phonology represented in the volume are those of Natural Phonology, Government Phonology, Optimality Theory, autosegemental phonology, and computational phonology. Constraints are juxtaposed either to rules or to preferences in the discussion of constraint-based vs. preference-based theories.
