Rugby has always been a sport with as much drama off the field as on it. For every thrilling last-minute Jonny Wilkinson drop-goal to win the world cup or Jonah Lomu rampage down the touchline for a try, there has been a split, a feud or a controversy. The Oval World is the first full-length history of rugby on a world scale – from its origins in the village-based football games of medieval times up to the globalised sport of the twenty-first century, now played in well over 100 countries. It tells the story of how a game played in an obscure English public school became the winter sport of the British Empire, spread to France, Argentina, Japan and the rest of the world and commanded a global television audience of over four billion for the last world cup final. And how American football – and other games such as Australian, Canadian and Gaelic football – emerged from rugby and highlight just how much the modern gridiron game owes to its English cousin. Featuring the great moments in the game's history and its great names – such as Jonah Lomu, David Duckham, Serge Blanco, Billy Boston and David Campese alongside Rupert Brooke, King George V, Boris Karloff, Charles de Gaulle and Nelson Mandela – The Oval World investigates just what it is about rugby that enables it to survive and thrive in countries with very different traditions and cultures. This is the the definitive world history of a truly global rugby.

Excerpt from The Three Friends: A Story of Rugby in the Forties On the whole, those who have most experience of athletics will, I think, gladly acknowledge that, in spite ofa tendency to professionalism (the result of over-exaltation of the subject in papers and magazines), the balance is decidedly on the right side and that the old listless, lounging life of so many at School and College is well replaced by the ambition to mount even into a third House Eleven, or the effect needed to get a place, or a proxz'me accessz't in a second Fifteen. Excerpt from Rugby There is nothing new in this small book except what has happened since 1900. The present compiler most warmly thanks Dr. W. H. D. Rouse and Mr. H. C. Bradby for their freely-granted permis sion to make use of their excellent books on Rugby School (a History of Rugby School, by W. H. D. Rouse, Duckworth and Co., 1898; and Rugby, by H. C. Bradby, George Bell and Sons, Dr. Rouse has fully investigated all available records, and most of the history here contained is a bare summary of his work. In so small a compass it has been frequently necessary to condense, even to the point of obscurity. For this and many other failings the compiler wishes to apologise to any possible reader. He is glad to feel that the booklet has at least interested one reader - him self, who has found plagiarism more entertaining than one would imagine. Any accuracy it may have is due to the revising care of his friend, G. A. F. M. Chatwin, whose Rugbeian lore much exceeds the writer's, and has been most freely lavished on the purging of errors from these pages. Those that remain are solely the writer's fault.
