Prayer and Thought in Monastic Tradition presents a chronological picture of the development of monastic thought and prayer from the early English Church (Bede, Adomnan) through to the 17th Century and William Law's religious community at King's Cliffe. Essays interact with different facets of monastic life, assessing the development and contribution of figures such as Boniface, the Venerable Bede, Anselm of Canterbury and Bernard of Clairvaux. The varying modes and outputs of the monastic life of prayer are considered, with focus on the use of different literary techniques in the creation of monastic documents, the interaction between monks and the laity, the creation of prayers and the purpose and structure of prayer in different contexts. The volume also discusses the nature of translation of classic monastic works, and the difficulties the translator faces. The highly distinguished contributors include; G.R. Evans, Sarah Foot, Henry Mayr-Harting, Brian McGuire, Henry Wansbrough and Rowan Williams.

The essays in this volume focus on the interpretation of the Book of Psalms and comparable texts in the Hebrew Bible. A variety of methods is applied to the ancient texts. Some essays concentrate on composition and structure, others on redaction and context. It is of great interest to see that each approach has its strength and its limits: stressing the importance to read the Psalms with a multi-dimensional matrix of methods. By viewing the Psalms as prayers, and thus as expressions of both faith and despair, a perspective on the contents of the ancient hymns and their functions in daily life has been opened. This volume contains various incentives for future research.

The first comprehensive study to be written on the history of ship launches and their ceremonies. Throughout history, man has been performing rituals at the launch of a new ship to seek supernatural or divine protection for his ship and those who will sail in her. The form of the ritual varies according to local custom and religion: from the breaking of a coconut, to the release of doves, to the role of astrologers in choosing an auspicious day for the launch. But the sentiment that lies behind all launching ceremonies is fear. At the moment of launching a new ship a seafarer is alert to any sign that his ship is not sound. He is superstitious and seeks reassurance that his ship and those who will sail in her will be protected. The rites of blood sacrifice and libations performed by the ancient Babylonians and Greeks are well evidenced. The evolution of this practice into todays tradition of breaking a bottle of wine against the bow of a ship before launch, still symbolising sacrifice, is explored as well as the now widely practised custom of inviting ladies to name and launch new ships.

Explore the lengthy history of legal metaphors in ancient prayer In biblical and other ancient Near Eastern sources, prayer is an opportunity to make one’s case before divine judges. Prayers were formulated using courtroom or trial language, including demands for judgment, confessions, and accusations. The presence of these legal concepts reveals ancient Near Eastern thoughts about what takes place when one prays. Holtz highlights legal concepts that appear in prayers, including the motif of the speakers' oppression in Psalms the possibility of countersuit against God through prayer, and divine attention and inattention as legal responses. By reading ancient prayers together with legal texts, this book shows how speakers took advantage of prayer as an opportunity to have their day in the divine court and even sue against divine injustice. Features Identification of legal vocabulary and concepts that appear in ancient prayers Analysis of legal metaphors in prayer examples in Akkadian and postbiblical rabbinic texts Interpretations of trial records and texts from Psalms and Lamentations

Where you go starts with your recognition of who you are in Christ. This book will inspire you to know who you am in Christ. It will motivate you to reach higher levels of success and satisfaction in life, family, and business. Our salvation in Christ ensures that every one of our needs or godly desires has been provided for by God. Yet many in the body of Christ are suffering and going without. Revelation is the key to developing the faith to receive the inheritance Jesus died to provide for us. One man said, “You are not suffering because there is a great devil, but because of your great ignorance.” Ignorance of our identity in Christ is one reason many Christians are not possessing their divine inheritance. As someone once said, “Your vast inheritance [in Christ] comes only in proportion to your new identity.” Our identity will influence what we become, how rich or poor we will be, how high we will climb, even how long we will live. The more revelation a person has of his new identity in Christ, the more of God’s vast promises he will be able to receive and manifest in his life and circumstances. In Revelation of Royalty, you will discover: You cannot rise any higher than your confession and revelation of royalty You are a speaking spirit and have authority over the devil and all his works
