He encountered gold robbers, a crooked gambler, and aided in subduing a large gang of outlaws bent on terrorizing the defenseless settlers. He joined the Texas Rangers where his adventures placed him in many precarious situations including a range war and confronting a crooked and ruthless sheriff. He was almost killed in a planned ambush. His life was saved in an unorthodox manner by his future bride.
