Research on reservoir sedimentation in recent years has been aimed mainly at water resources projects in developing countries. These countries, especially in Africa, often have to cope with long droughts, flash floods and severe erosion problems. Large reservoir capacities are required to capture water provided by flash floods so as to ensure the supply of water in periods of drought. The problem arising however is that these floods, due to their tremendous stream power, carry enormous volumes of sediment which, due to the size of reservoirs, are virtually deposited in toto in the reservoir basin, leading to fast deterioration of a costly investment. Accurate forecasting of reservoir behaviour is therefore of the utmost importance.This book fills a gap in current literature by providing in one volume comprehensive coverage of techniques required to practically investigate the effects sediment deposition in reservoirs has on the viability of water resources projects. Current techniques for practically estimating sediment yield from catchments, estimating the volume of sediment expected to deposit in reservoirs, predicting sediment distribution and calculating scour downstream of reservoirs are evaluated and presented. The liberal use of diagrams and graphs to explain the various techniques enhances understanding and makes practical application simple. A major feature of the book is the application of stream power theory to explain the process of reservoir sedimentation and to develop four new methods for predicting sediment distribution in reservoirs.The book is primarily directed at practising engineers involved in the planning and design of water resources projects and at post-graduate students interested in this field of study.

About four years ago Dr. Gilbert White visited China and sowed the seeds of this project through conversations with Drs. Huang and Gong of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Mr. Long of the Yellow River Conservancy Commission. After some additional rounds of communications by letter, the plan for a workshop evolved and Drs. Wolman and Brush visited with Dr. Sabadell of the Nat_ional Science Foundation to begin the initial planning. In March 1987 Dr. Brush visited China and the details were worked out for the October 1987 workshop. At the outset it was recognized that the 10 American scientists and engineers ltad very Ii ttle knowledge of the Yellow River and none had ever seen it. Therefore, it became important that field trips be scheduled before the workshop to better set the stage for fruitful discussions. It was also acknowledged that the American participants could not present papers about the Yellow River per se so their offerings reflected their general knowledge of rivers using other rivers as examples. On the other hand the Chinese participants were all well into the difficult problems of harnessing the Yellow River and made their presentations accordingly. Despite these differences the subject matter was the unifying thread and cross communication was excellent.

The Arkansas River between Pueblo, Colorado, and John Martin Dam, a distance of about 125 river miles, is an alluvial, sand-bed river. It meanders between bluffs in a flood plain about one mile in width. During geologic time the downstream (eastern) portion of this reach has been migrating southward due to heavy sediment loads from northern tributaries. A local flood control project is being planned for the town of La Junta, which is in the downstream one-third of this reach. A study was undertaken to evaluate the future performance of various flood control alternatives with regard to channel stability, sediment movement, and project maintenance. The alternatives considered were various channel and levee configurations. Evaluations were based on both long-term (100-year period) and short-term (single flood event) hydrologic scenarios. The primary tool used in this study was the movable boundary mathematical model HEC-6 entitled 'Scour and Deposition in Rivers and Reservoirs.' The hydrologic and sediment regimes of the study reach are complex due to four tributaries and eleven major irrigation diversions. This paper describes development of representative data for the long-term analysis, operation of the model, calibration and simulation strategies employed, interpretation of model results, and computational aspects of this application.
