This is a report of the third conference on Orphans and Vulnerable Children which took place in Windhoek from 9 - 11 February 2005.

Womens contributions against apartheid under the auspices of the Namibian liberation movement SWAPO and their personal experiences in exile take center stage in this study. Male and female leadership structures in exile are analysed whilst the sexual politics in the refugee camps and the public imagery of female representation in SWAPOs nationalism receive special attention. The partys public pronouncements of women empowerment and gender equality are compared to the actual implementations of gender politics during and after the liberation struggle.

Women Leading Education across the Continents is the first collection of research about and stories of women in basic and higher education leadership from every region of the globe. The chapters are authored by scholars representing every continent, including a keynote from the first all female team to traverse Antarctica. The book captures not only statistical data about the position of women in basic and higher education in over 17 countries, but relates compelling insights and stories about the challenges that women face in leadership, the limited access to education by young women, and some strategies for success that have fanned a flame to light the way for both women and men to follow toward equity and social justice.

In August 2008, Heads of State of the Southern African Development Community adopted the ground-breaking SADC Protocol on Gender and Development. This followed a concerted campaign by NGOs under the umbrella of the Southern Africa Gender Protocol Alliance. By the 2013 Heads of State summit, 13 countries had signed and 12 countries had ratified the SADC Gender Protocol. The Protocol is now in force. With two years to go, time is ticking to 2015, when governments need to have achieved 28 targets for the attainment of gender equality. In keeping with the Alliance slogan: "Yes we must", this 2013 Barometer provides a wealth of updated data against which progress will be measured by all those who cherish democracy in the region. The SADC Gender and Development Index (SGDI), introduced in 2011, complements the Citizen Score Card (CSC) that has been running for five years to benchmark progress.
