When it comes to any relationship, connection is usually one of our top priorities. Yet, when we are in a relationship with an autistic person, in time, we may end up feeling lonely, emotionally exhausted, and disconnected from the person we used to be, from our friends and family, our values, our strength and our needs. It invites readers to join the author on a journey of re-discovery of who they are, a deep but gentle (sometimes playful) exploration of skills, needs, values, expectations, and likes. It also offers a host of real-life examples that demonstrate some typical pitfalls in communication in mixed-neurotype relationships and how to navigate them, so that we can have easier and more fruitful interactions with our partners. Mabel Schenone, the author, has been married to a man affected by autism (level 1) for over 30 years. The first 25 years of their marriage included very painful and stressful situations because they were not even aware autism was part of their relationship. A formal diagnosis later on provided Mabel with validation and propelled her into a relentless search for answers and tools to work on herself and her relationship with her husband. After undertaking therapy, completing several training courses, and speaking to many other partners/spouses in similar situations, she identified the need for a practical “compass” to help us when we are struggling and to encourage us to keep on learning and growing.
