In the continental United States both Rhode Island and Massachusetts have considerably larger populations per square mile, and smaller areas of arable land per person than this island. A charge of 550 pounds of leaves and 300 gallons of water, when distilled for hours, yielded about 60 gallons of distillate. The mature leaves yielded 0 cubic centimeters of oil, and the immature leaves, cubic centimeters. Probably the use of tender, young leaves would have given a still greater difference.
