The objective of this remedial investigation (RI) is to evaluate, as part of the first operable unit for site remediation, the nature and extent of contamination as it relates to the existing public water supply wells operated by the South Adams County Water and Sanitation District. A public health endangerment assessment was conducted to identify compounds which could pose a significant health threat. These investigations have identified ground water as the major migration pathway. The six volatile organic chemicals of primary concern are 11DCE,11DCLE, T12DCE, 111TCE, TRCLE, and TCLEE. A comprehensive investigation analysis was conducted to (1) characterize the hydrogeologic system and (2) quantify the ground water flow and containment transport processes. A three dimensional ground water flow and containment transfer model was developed and calibrated on a preliminary basis to aid in projection of future TRCLE concentrations. This first operable unit RI report is not in intended to address the identity of contributing sources or their relative contributions to the contamination.

Field investigations conducted over the last several years in the area offpost of RMA have examined various media to evaluate the nature and extent of contamination that may have resulted from contaminant migration from Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA). Consumptive Use Assessments and Contamination Assessments conducted since 1984 have indicated that ground water was the primary pathway for contaminant migration to the offpost area. Thus, much of the Remedial Investigation (RI) efforts focused on evaluating ground-water pathways and the nature and extent of ground-water contamination. However, surface water, sediments, air, and biota were also examined to evaluate potential contamination in these media and the extent to which these media may be contaminant pathways from RMA to the Offpost Operable Unit.

The purpose of the Water Remedial Investigation is to present the U.S. Department of the Army's Remedial Investigation results for the RMA on-post water media. This document is a formal Remedial Investigation product prepared in accordance with the Federal Facility Agreement (1989), the RMA Technical Program Plan (TPP) (Program Manager's Offices PMO, 1988 RIG #88131R01) and the June 1983 Remedial Investigation Guidance Document (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, EPA). This report is one of four Remedial Investigation reports and seven Remedial Investigation Study Area Reports (SARs) prepared define the nature and extent of contamination and complete a comprehensive Remedial Investigation for the On-post Operable Unit of RMA as required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), as amended by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) and the National Contingency Plan (NCP). The Water Remedial Investigation is a compilation, integration and interpretation of ground and surface water data obtained from specific tasks designed to provide a comprehensive assessment of contaminant occurrence at the site. jg.

Many books have now been published in the broad field of environmental toxicology. However, to date, none of have presented the often fascinating stories of the wildlife science, and the steps along the way from discovery of problems caused by environmental pollutants to the regulatory and non-regulatory efforts to address the problems. This book provides case by case examinations of how toxic chemical effects on wildlife have brought about policy and regulatory decisions, and positive changes in environmental conditions. Wild animal stories, whether they are about the disappearance of charismatic top predators, or of grossly deformed embryos or frogs, provide powerful symbols that can and have captured the public's imagination and have resulted in increased awareness by decision makers. It is the intent of this book to present factual and balanced overviews and summaries of the science and the subsequent regulatory processes that followed to effect change (or not). We cover a variety of chemicals and topics beginning with an update of the classic California coastal DDT story of eggshell thinning and avian reproduction to more recent cases, such as the veterinarian pharmaceutical that has brought three species of Asian vultures to the brink of extinction. Researchers, regulators, educators, NGOs and the general public will find valuable insights into the processes and mechanisms involved both in environmental scientific investigation and in efforts to effect positive change.
