Excerpt from Register of the Society of the Cincinnati of Maryland: Brought Down to February 22nd, 1897 Since the Society of the Cincinnati of Maryland was organized at Annapolis, on November 21st, 1783, Resolutions authorizing the publication of the transactions and list of members appear on the Minutes of July 4th, 1810; July 4th, 1840; July 4th, 1846; October 19th, 1868; February 22d, 1881; and on February 22d, 1892, when, on motion of Professor Daves, it was "Resolved, that the President appoint a Committee of three to collect material for a history of the Maryland State Society of the Cincinnati, and to edit it in pamphlet form for distribution among the members. That this book shall contain a list of all the members of the Society, and a statement of their title by inheritance." Committee on Publication. Prof. Edward Graham Daves, Chairman. Hon. William Benning Webb, Wilson Cary McHenry, Esq. At the meeting of February 22d, 1894, it was reported that all the material for the Register had been collected. On August 1st, 1894, Professor Daves died in Boston, where he was at work on the historical sketch of the "Society of the Cincinnati," which, though evidently not completed, the Committee deemed best to publish as it was found. By the death of Professor Daves the Committee sustained a severe loss. Mr. Webb succeeded Professor Daves as Chairman on February 22d, 1895. Hon. Oswald Tilghman and John C. Daves, Esq., were appointed to fill the vacancies, Mr. McHenry having resigned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "[Historian Allen] recreates in this meticulous and fast-moving posthumous account the events of the pivotal year 1789 in America. It’s a superb distillation of a complex moment in U.S. history.”— Publishers Weekly, Starred Review 1789: George Washington and the Founders Create Americadraws on hundreds of sources to paint a vivid portrait of the new nation, setting out to show the world at large that a new—and very American—form of government was calling itself into being. “No future session of Congress will ever have so arduous and weighty a charge on their hands,” the New York Gazette observed in summer 1789. “No examples to imitate, and no striking historical facts on which to ground their decisions—All is bare creation.” The Constitution had been written in 1787 and ratified in 1788. But 1789 was the year the government it described—albeit only in the broadest of terms—had to be brought into being. Veteran journalist Thomas B. Allen brings decades of experience and a gifted storyteller’s eye to the long-hidden history of how George Washington and the Founders set the federal government into motion.

Across North America's periphery, unknown and overlooked Civil War campaigns were waged over whether the United States or Confederacy would dominate lands, mines, and seaborne transportation networks of North America's mineral wealth. The U.S. needed this wealth to stabilize their wartime economy while the Confederacy sought to expand their own treasury. Confederate armies advanced to seize the West and its gold and silver reserves, while warships steamed to intercept Panama route ships transporting bullion from California to Panama to New York. United States forces responded by expelling Confederate incursions and solidified territorial control by combating Indigenous populations and enacting laws encouraging frontier settlement. The U.S. Navy patrolled key ports, convoyed treasure ships, and integrated continent-wide intelligence networks in the ultimate game of cat and mouse. This book examines the campaigns to control North America's mineral wealth, linking the Civil War's military, naval, political, diplomatic and economic elements. Included are the hemispheric land and sea adventures involving tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt, admiral and explorer Charles Wilkes, renowned sea captain Raphael Semmes, General Henry Sibley, cowboy and mountain man Kit Carson, Indigenous leaders Mangas Coloradas and Geronimo, writer and miner Mark Twain, and Mormon leader Brigham Young.

With Commodore Perry to Japan offers a personal account of Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry’s expedition to Japan through the eyes of a sixteen-year-old purser’s clerk of the USS Mississippi. The documentary edition, endorsed by the National Historic Publications & Records Commission, provides excellent coverage of both the political mission of the Perry expedition, the opening of relations with Japan, and of the social history of a naval warship as well. Also included are fifty-five illustrations ranging from hand drawn, pen-and-ink scenes of everyday life sketched by Speiden and other members of the crew to exquisitely detailed pith paintings by Chinese artists.
