Excerpt from Redgauntlet, Vol. 1 Redgauntlet was originally called Herries, Lockhart says, until Constable persuaded the author to choose the more striking name. It was published in June 1824, and was received somewhat coldly. To contemporaries, no doubt, it could not present the interest of autobiography as it does to us. It was Scott's only novel of the year he was occupied with the second edition of his Life of Swift, with reviews, with a Tribute to the Memory of Lord Byron, and with the furnishing and decoration of Abbotsford. Excerpt from Redgauntlet a Tale of the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 3 of 3 I see you look at me hard, said he to Fair ford. Had you been an officer of the d - d customs, my terriers' backs would have been up. He opened his breast, and shewed Alan a pair of pistols disposed between his waistcoat and jacket, placing his finger, at the same time, upon the cock of one of them. But come, you are an honest fellow, though you're a close one. I dare say you think me a queer custo mer; but I can tell you, they that see the ship leave harbour, know little of the seas she is to sail through. My father, honest old gentleman, ne ver would have thought to see me master of the Jumping Jenny. Fairford said, it seemed very clear indeed that Mr Ewart's education was far superior to the line he at present occupied. Redgauntlet Volume 1 By Walter Scott Set in 1765 in the fictitious third Jacobite rebellion, Redgauntlet tells of Darsie Latimer, a student of law who becomes embroiled in a plot to put Prince Charles Edward (aka, Bonnie Prince Charlie) on the British throne. He is kidnapped by his uncle, Redgauntlet, who is involved in a last, fictional attempt to restore the Stewarts to the British throne. The events in Redgauntlet never actually took place, but they are probable, and form the culmination of Scott's series of Jacobite novels.
