Becoming a Woman in the Age of Enlightenment: French Art from the Horvitz Collection' is primarily an exhibition of drawings but will include pastels, paintings, and sculptures selected from one of the world?s best private collections of French drawings. The exhibition will feature nearly 120 works by many of the most prominent artists of the eighteenth century, including Antoine Watteau, Nicolas Lancret, François Boucher, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, as well as lesser-known artists both male and female, such as Anne Vallayer-Coster, Gabrielle Capet, François-André Vincent, Philibert-Louis Debucourt. Ranging from spirited, improvisational sketches and figural studies, to highly finished drawings of exquisite beauty, the works included in the exhibition vary in terms of style, genre, and period.0Becoming a Woman will be organized into thematic sections that address some of the most important and defining questions of women?s lives in the eighteenth century. These include: how the stages of a woman?s life were measured; what cultural attitudes and conditions in France shaped how women were defined; what significant relations women formed with men; what social and familial rituals gave order to their lives; what pleasures they pursued; and what work they accomplished. The aim is to bring new insights to the questions of what it meant to be a woman in this period, by offering the first exhibition to focus specifically on representations of women of a broad range of ages and conditions.00Exhibition: Harn Museum of Art, University of Florida, Gainesville, USA (06.10.-31.12.2017).

This book offers an aesthetic account of intellectual property rights as they concern works of art and literature. The thesis begins with a comparison of British copyright and French droit d'auteur, and goes through a historical survey of licenses and printing privileges in both countries, including the Statute of Anne of 1710 as well as the Fine Arts Act of 1862 in Britain, and La loi du 19 juillet 1793 in France. The core of the thesis is a reading of selected legal cases in Britain and France from the early 19th century to the present. Cases concerning works of art and literature are closely analyzed and compared in terms of their concern and consequences for the scope of protection, the justification for copyright, the concept of the work and of the author/creator, the notion of originality, and the concepts of copying and infringement. Cases are presented chronologically in order to expose trends and developments. It presents, in outline, a conceptual history of reproduction (as substitution, as multiplication, as appropriation), in order to understand the legal conflicts and inconsistencies in copyright law. These particularly concern the disparity between the ownership of an immaterial work and that of its material manifestation, as well as the lack of an appropriate legal distinction between images and texts. Dissertation.

Neal Stephenson follows his highly-praised historical novels, Quicksilver and The Confusion, with the extraordinary third and final volume of the Baroque Cycle. The year is 1714. Daniel Waterhouse has returned to England, where he joins forces with his friend Isaac Newton to hunt down a shadowy group attempting to blow up Natural Philosophers with 'Infernal Devices' - time bombs. As Daniel and Newton conspire, an increasingly vicious struggle is waged for England's Crown: who will take control when the ailing queen dies? Tories and Whigs clash as one faction jockeys to replace Queen Anne with 'The Pretender' James Stuart, and the other promotes the Hanoverian dynasty of Princess Caroline. Meanwhile, a long-simmering dispute between Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz comes to a head, with potentially cataclysmic consequences. Wildly inventive, brilliantly conceived, The System of the World is the final volume in Neal Stephenson's hugely ambitious and compelling saga. Filled with a remarkable cast of characters in a time of genius, discovery and change, the Baroque Cycle is a magnificent and unique achievement.
