Excerpt from Decennial Record of the Class of 1880: Of Union College, 1880-1890 Ten years have wrought but few changes in the membership of the Class of '80. A single asterisk dots its muster roll - a single member from the sixty odd classmates who graduated from the Freshman class thirteen years ago, has passed over the great divide. It is a vital record probably unequalled in college history, and although in our case as in many others, death chose a shining mark for his fatal arrow, we may count ourselves most fortunate that our ranks are to-day so nearly intact. So swiftly and silently the years sped by that we hardly realized their passage, or stopped to count them, till the decennial anniversary of our graduation was close upon us. We had scarcely noticed the annual change in the final numeral of the year of our Lord. It was only when in a single night the 8 became a 9, we awoke to a stern realization of the fact that we were ten years away from the year 1880. Yet the decade has wrought neither decadence nor decay. Sobered a little, perhaps, by the growing responsibilities of the passing years, our lives are broader and deeper, more evenly balanced, better adjusted to our several environments, and therefore more useful, more charitable, more successful and, on the whole, perhaps, more happy. The principal events in the history of individual members have been followed in our former bulletins, and are carried forward to date in the pages which follow. Excerpt from History of the Class of 1866: Union College; Reunion, June 23d, 1891 Classmates: In its physical aspect Old Union has not materially changed since the Class of Sixty-six left its halls. The once sleepy old town has, in the interval, doubled its population and is slowly enclosing the college grounds, but the unfilial Alumnus who revisits his Alma Mater for the first time in a quarter of a century will find campus and pasture, terrace and "gray old walls" far less affected by the tooth of time than he is himself. In Captain Jack's garden the syringas overarch the paths as in days of yore and drop their perfumes on strolling lovers; the old elm stretches its great arms above the green, and "the brook that bounds through Union's grounds" is still there - after a hard shower. It is only when he begins to search for the faces linked with memories of college days that he realizes how far the flood of years has carried him. Of the Board of Trustees who came in solemn procession to vote him his sheepskin and sit in judgment upon his Commencement oratory, not one remains in active service. Two only survive in well-earned retirement - Dr. J. Trumbull Backus and Judge Platt Potter. The Faculty who chastened his youthful genius have been only less leniently dealt with. The Fathers, where are they? Hickok, Lewis, Jackson, Pearson, Newman (?), Stanton, Gillespie, Welch - all have joined the great majority. A few still serve their generation in other callings. Professor Chandler holds an eminent position in Columbia College and in the civic life of New York. Professor Clark is Secretary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, with headquarters in Boston. Excerpt from Union College; Record of Class 1868, 50th Year Reunion, 1868-1918 The committee in charge of the half-century Record of the Class of 1868 has made much effort to render it as complete as possible. All printed reports issued by the class and college, supplemented by correspondence and otherwise have been utilized. The necessary incompleteness of the Record is in part ex plained by the fact that for various reasons some members of the class have failed to report at the class reunions, or to reply to official communications. This condition more or less exists in all class records and in all colleges. Besides it has been im possible for obvious reasons to secure such fullness of statistics as classes in some American colleges now seek to obtain. It may also be noted that until a comparatively recent period the College has not sought to keep track of its old students and alumni with the care and energy now manifested. It is, however, a matter for congratulation that a large amount of interesting data have been collated, and embodied in the Rec ord as it now appears. The cover is printed in garnet, the present college color; in 1868, the college color was magenta. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
