Randomness and Recurrence in Dynamical Systems aims to bridge a gap between undergraduate teaching and the research level in mathematical analysis. It makes ideas on averaging, randomness, and recurrence, which traditionally require measure theory, accessible at the undergraduate and lower graduate level. The author develops new techniques of proof and adapts known proofs to make the material accessible to students with only a background in elementary real analysis. Over 60 figures are used to explain proofs, provide alternative viewpoints and elaborate on the main text. The book explains further developments in terms of measure theory. The results are presented in the context of dynamical systems, and the quantitative results are related to the underlying qualitative phenomena—chaos, randomness, recurrence and order. The final part of the book introduces and motivates measure theory and the notion of a measurable set, and describes the relationship of Birkhoff's Individual Ergodic Theorem to the preceding ideas. Developments in other dynamical systems are indicated, in particular Lévy's result on the frequency of occurence of a given digit in the partial fractions expansion of a number.

Welcome to Real Analysis is designed for use in an introductory undergraduate course in real analysis. Much of the development is in the setting of the general metric space. The book makes substantial use not only of the real line and $n$-dimensional Euclidean space, but also sequence and function spaces. Proving and extending results from single-variable calculus provides motivation throughout. The more abstract ideas come to life in meaningful and accessible applications. For example, the contraction mapping principle is used to prove an existence and uniqueness theorem for solutions of ordinary differential equations and the existence of certain fractals; the continuity of the integration operator on the space of continuous functions on a compact interval paves the way for some results about power series. The exposition is exceedingly clear and well-motivated. There are a wide variety of exercises and many pedagogical innovations. For example, each chapter includes Reading Questions so that students can check their understanding. In addition to the standard material in a first real analysis course, the book contains two concluding chapters on dynamical systems and fractals as an illustration of the power of the theory developed.

Near the Horizon starts out by considering several optical phenomena that can occur when the sun is near the horizon. One can sometimes see objects that are actually below the horizon. Sometimes there seems to be a dark strip in the middle of the solar disk. These are a result of the way that the atmosphere affects the geometry of light rays. Broer starts his book with the Fermat principle (rays of light take least-time paths) and deduces from it laws for refraction and reflection; by expressing these as conservation laws, he can handle both the case of inhomogeneous layers of air and the case of continuous variation in the refraction index. A surprising application is the brachistochrone problem, in which the path of fastest descent is determined by studying how a light ray would behave in a “flat earth” atmosphere whose refraction index is determined by the gravitational potential. This leads to a very interesting chapter on the cycloid and its properties. The final chapters move from the elementary theory to a more sophisticated version in which the Fermat Principle leads to a Riemannian metric whose geodesics are the paths of light rays. This gives us an optics which is geometric in a new sense, and serves as a nice demonstration of the physical applicability of Riemannian geometry.

Inverse problems occur frequently in science and technology, whenever we need to infer causes from effects that we can measure. Mathematically, they are difficult problems because they are unstable: small bits of noise in the measurement can completely throw off the solution. Nevertheless, there are methods for finding good approximate solutions. Linear Inverse Problems and Tikhonov Regularization examines one such method: Tikhonov regularization for linear inverse problems defined on Hilbert spaces. This is a clear example of the power of applying deep mathematical theory to solve practical problems. Beginning with a basic analysis of Tikhonov regularization, this book introduces the singular value expansion for compact operators, and uses it to explain why and how the method works. Tikhonov regularization with seminorms is also analyzed, which requires introducing densely defined unbounded operators and their basic properties. John Horton Conway's unique approach to quadratic forms was the subject of the Hedrick Lectures that he gave in August of 1991 at the Joint Meetings of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society in Orono, Maine. This book presents the substance of those lectures. The book should not be thought of as a serious textbook on the theory of quadratic forms. It consists rather of a number of essays on particular aspects of quadratic forms that have interested the author. The lectures are self-contained and will be accessible to the generally informed reader who has no particular background in quadratic form theory. The minor exceptions should not interrupt the flow of ideas. The afterthoughts to the lectures contain discussion of related matters that occasionally presuppose greater knowledge.
