Recent experiments seem to be ready to answer the question whether QCD be the correct theory of strong interactions at all scales, or just an effective high-energy line of a yet undiscovered theory. With the upgraded Large Hadron Collider, a proton-proton collision will reach the Center of Mass (CoM) energy of 14 TeV per colliding pair. Perturbative QCD will then be tested with the highest precision. In this realm, the present book begins reviewing QCD with the aim to focus on the Drell-Yan process and the experiments conceived to validate it. In doing this the approach will be exclusively perturbative. Non perturbative techniques, such as lattice QCD, QCD sum rules, or concepts like the MIT bag model will not be discussed.

This book consists of reviews covering all aspects of quantum chromodynamics as we know it today. The articles have been written by recognized experts in this field, in honor of the 75th birthday of Professor Boris Ioffe. Combining features of a handbook and a textbook, this is the most comprehensive source of information on the present status of QCD. It is intended for students as well as physicists — both theorists and experimentalists.Each review is self-contained and pedagogically structured, providing the general formulation of the problem, telling where it stands with respect to other issues and why it is interesting and important, presenting the history of the subject, qualitative insights, and so on. The first part of the book is historical in nature. It includes, among other articles, Boris Ioffe's and Yuri Orlov's memoirs on high energy physics in the 1950's, a note by B V Geshkenbein on Ioffe's career in particle physics, and an essay on the discovery of asymptotic freedom written by David Gross.

The Advanced Research Workshop on QeD Hard Hadronic Processes was held on 8-13 October 1987 at Hotel on the Cay, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. The underlying theme of the workshop, the first in a series, was an examination, both theoretical and experimental, of the state of understanding of Quantum Chromodynamics. Because of the pervasiveness of the strong interactions in all aspects of high energy physics, QCD is central to many problems in elementary particle physics. Therefore, this workshop was organized to provide a forum in which the theory Quantum Chromodynamics cou 1 d be confronted with experi ment. The workshop was organ i zed in four sessions, each of which concentrated on a major experimental arena in which a hard QCD process can be measured experimentally. A fifth session was rlevoted to global issues which effect all QCD processes. Each session began with a survey of the theoretical developments in the particular area and concluded with a round table which discussed the various information presented in the course of the discussions. A session of the workshop was devoted to the direct production of high transverse momentum photons in hadronic interactions. Data from several experiments, either completed or in progress at CERN (NA3, NA24, WA70, UA6, CCOR, R806, AFS, RllO, UA1 and UA2), were di scussed and the prospects for two new upcomi ng experi ments from Fermil ab (E-705, E-706) were presented.

This book will be of great interest to advanced students and researchers in the area of high energy theoretical physics. Being the most complete and updated review volume on Perturbative QCD, it serves as an extremely useful textbook or reference book. Quantum Chromodynamics is a thorough introduction for students in theoretical physics and scientists needing a reference and exercise book in this field. The book presents the necessary mathematical tools together with many examples and worked problems. In introductory chapters the reader becomes familiar with the hadron spectrum, while the SU(N) symmetry groups and the relativistic field theory are briefly recapitulated; then a discussion of scalar quantum electrodynamics and scattering reactions follow before gauge quark-quark interactions, perturbational QCD, renormalization groups, and tests of pertubational QCD are all treated in detail. Chapters on non-perturbational QCD and quasi-phenomenological applications conclude the text.

The notion of transversity in hadronic physics has been with us for over 25 years. Intriguing though it might have been, for much of that time transversity remained an intangible and remote object, of interest principally to a few theoreticians. In recent years transversity and transverse-spin effects in general have grown as both theoretical and experimental areas of active research. This increasing attention has now matured into a thriving field with a driving force of its own. The ever-growing bulk of data on asymmetries in collisions involving transversely polarised hadrons demands a more solid and coherent theoretical basis for its description. Indeed, it now appears rather clear that transversity and other closely related properties play a significant role in such phenomena.As part of a Ministry-funded inter-university Research Project, this workshop was organised to gather together experimentalists and theoreticians engaged in investigating the nature of transverse spin in hadronic physics, with the intent of favouring the exchange of up-to-date theoretical and experimental ideas and news on the subject. Over 70 physicists took part and very nearly all the major experiments involved in transverse-spin studies were officially represented, as too were the main theory groups working in the field. New results and new analyses sparked many interesting and lively discussions.
