Este artículo expone una propuesta de orientación familiar, desde la perspectiva sistémica, pensada a partir de las necesidades reconocidas, expresadas y vividas por las familiar de hoy, en especial por aquellas con las cuales las autoras hicieron su práctica profesional. Se busca mostrar posibilidades de acción en respuesta a tales necesidades, con el propósito de acompañar de manera útil en los procesos de crecimiento, desarrollo y cambio que la vida familiar requiere. La propuesta está respaldada por una revisión teórica, que parte del concepto de familia e incluye su estudio desde diversos enfoques a lo largo de la historia; lo que permite el reconocimiento de las diversas formas de atención familiar y el papel de las personas que acompañan los procesos, y por ende comprender el rol del orientador como la persona que acompaña, conoce su realidad y trabaja de la mano con ella en la búsqueda conjunta de solución a sus dificultades.
