This volume contains papers from the lectures and seminars given at the School. The lectures centered around a review and discussion of the most significant results obtained to date through the study of nuclear structure with electromagnetic and other high energy probes. Seminars of a more specialized nature were devoted to a discussion of recent results obtained in several research centers.

The proceedings reflect the recent experimental and theoretical progress in pion nuclear physics in topics like pionic atoms, pion absorption, charge exchange, (π, 2π), and others involving pions in nuclei using different probes, as electron photons or heavy ions. Related topics on chiral symmetry, low energy πN and (γ, π⁰) and quark degrees of freedom are also addressed.

Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics, Volume 24: The Nature of Hadrons and Nuclei by Electron Scattering covers the proceedings of the International School of Nuclear Physics. The book presents 24 papers that discuss topics concerning hadrons and nuclei. The coverage of the text includes electron scattering and few-nucleon systems; occupation probabilities of shell-model orbitals; and the response function of nuclear matter. The book also tackles the internal spin structure of the nucleon; parity-violating electron scattering; and hard pion exchange currents and the backward deuteron disintegration. The proceedings at the 4th course of the International School of Heavy Ion Physics — Exotic Nuclei, containing the lectures and seminars by world specialists in the field, cover some of the central themes of the physics of exotic nuclei which lie at the forefront of nuclear research.
