Presents proceedings of a workshop conducted to produce an action plan focusing on Kejimkujik National Park as the first ecological research and monitoring site (Ecological Science Centre) in the Maritime Atlantic Ecozone, and to identify other sites and issues of concern to the regional environment. The first section summarizes results of discussions of the most important environmental issues in the Ecozone, and how and where they should be addressed. The second section reviews results of working group sessions on the following themes: building the regional research and monitoring framework; creating the institutional framework for management; the role of Kejimkujik National Park; and the long-term action plan. The appendix contains summaries of workshop presentations on such topics as ecological monitoring.

This is the second of two high-level, data-rich volumes from the massive Smithsonian/MAB Biological Diversity Program documenting the latest findings on forest biodiversity. In original contributions, some three hundred scientists from over forty countries discuss socioeconomic aspects, ecological monitoring and assessment, forest dynamics, growth trends, dry forests, species richness of woody regeneration and of vascular plants, hurricane impact, tropical cloud forests, Landsat-TM satellite mapping, and quantitative ethnobotany. The book covers first the research and monitoring methodologies for the New World and then the results of individual research and integrated studies on all aspects of forest biodiversity in North and South America and the Caribbean.

This set of papers presents a description of the synthesis of hydrological problems and various environmental implications and management strategies for different highland and headwater regions of the world. Regions covered include the Himalayas, Russian mountains, Amazonia, and upland Wales.

The Kejimkujik Watershed Study (KWS) was initiated in 1978 in response to growing concerns about the possible harmful effects on the environment of long range transport of air pollutants, particularly acid rain. It is one of five calibrated watershed studies in Canada that represent a range of climatic conditions, terrain sensitivities, and rates of atmospheric acidic deposition. This report presents the proceedings of a workshop on the study, covering programs and concepts in integrated monitoring and research; monitoring global change; research and monitoring in and around Kejimkujik National Park; monitoring and research of surface waters, lakes and streams, and forests and watersheds; and the organization and interpretation of Kejimkujik research station establishment. Summary reports are given on watershed studies in the Experimental Ponds Area of Newfoundland, the Integrated Forest Studies Cooperative in Vermont, and the Humic Lake acidification experiment in Norway. Highlights of an open discussion on future activities are also included.
