Excerpt from Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 24: Begin a Half-Yearil Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciencfs It is hardly necessary to insist upon the utmost attention being paid to a variety of circumstances regarding the general management of scro fula; such as good and wholesome food, 'good air, sea-bathing, exercise, and various other hygienic means, which are known to exercise the hap piest effects in every form and variety of this disease; and, if trusted to alone, would, I am persuaded, in many instances give the patient as good, if not better, chance of getting rid of this most intractable disease. Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 48: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; July-December, 1863 Bromide of Ammonium. - One of the best plans of treating h00ping cough is the administration of nitric acid in syrup, combined with topical application to the larynx of nitrate of silver. Lately bromide of ammonium has been introduced, and has been found of much use in some cases of the disease. For infants, two or three grains three times a day is a proper dose; for older children, from four to eight grains. The simpler the vehicle the better. (dr. G. D. Gibb, p. Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 27: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; January-June, 1853 Sarcina ventriculi. - One indication necessary to be ful filled in the treatment of this disease is to destroy the fungus by a regular and systematic exhibition of alkalies, thereby removing the acidity so essential to its formation and development, and then to employ some remedy capable of destroying its growth. This may be done by giving bicarbonate of potash and infusion of quassia, and afterwards the sulphite of soda. The operation of this salt seems to be that the sulphite being decomposed in the stomach by the acids therein generated, sulphurous acid gas is liberated, the destructive effects of which upon parasitic formations like the sarcina is well known.
