Your students will create easy-to-read "flip booklets" that will allow them to form prefixes and suffixes! There are two levels of flip booklets. The beginning level includes 5 simple words with larger print. The more advanced level features nine slightly more complex words. Each mini-booklet is on a single piece of paper for ease of use! The students cut out small cards and staple them to another that forms the back, to create a booklet in which the cards are "flipped" up to create a new word each time. For example, for the "pre-" book the students read "precaution." They flip up the word caution to reveal the word historic while the prefix pre remains. They then read "prehistoric." This continues with predetermine, preschool, preview, pretest, preshrunk and others to give them a total of nine different words all formed using the prefix pre. Each page also includes a definition of the prefix or suffix. The prefix "pre" means "before, earlier, or in front of." In this way the students can actually see how a word changes by placing a prefix in front, or a suffix behind. As they flip through the nine words in each booklet, they internalize the meaning. This sure beats fill-in-the-blank worksheets! The following prefixes are covered in this book: anti-, bi-, dis-, hydro-, hyper-, in-, inter-, mis-, pre-, re-, sub-, tri-, un- and under-. The following suffixes are also included: -ful, -less, -ly, -ment, -ness, -ship and -y.

This resource begins with an introduction to singular and plural words and includes easy-to-understand instructions on how to form different plurals, examples, colorful illustrations, and reproducible worksheets for individual practice. Students will be taught how to determine if -s or -es should be added to the ending to form the plural, if the spelling stays the same in the singular and plural, or if the plural is formed by making another kind of change to the singular. They will also learn that a final f or fe of a noun often changes to v before adding -es to make it mean more than one and that a final y of a word often changes to i before adding -es to form the plural. Reproducible worksheets that teach about inflectional endings, irregular verbs, compound words, and prefixes and suffixes are also available. Students will discover that the inflectional endings -s or -es, -ing, and -ed can be added to verbs to change their tense and that -er and -est can be used for comparison purposes of adjectives and adverbs. Moreover, they will learn that the final consonant of some words must be doubled and the final e of some words dropped before adding an ending that begins with a vowel and that the final y of some words is changed to i before adding an ending that doesn't begin with an i. Students will be taught to recognize the different forms of verbs and the forms of comparison for adjectives and adverbs. They will also be taught how to recognize various irregular verbs and irregular comparatives and superlatives. In addition, students will discover how a root word changes in meaning when another word, a prefix, or suffix is added to it and will learn that there are three different kinds of compound words. A reproducible practice test is included towards the end of the book. The same practice test and a formal unit test are also available online as computer-based tests. You can access the tests free of charge by visiting the Habakkuk Educational Materials website at https://www.habakkuk.net/.
