No building is properly conserved if it is not structurally sound. Consequently architects, engineers and conservation officers need an adequate grounding in the technology, the materials and the historic origins of the building in order to complete a conservation project successfully. Structural Design in Building Conservation deals with design issues and technical choices, showing how they are integrated with the planning and architectural outcomes in a conservation project. It brings together theory with current conservation technology, discussing the possibilities of structural details and strategies in architectural expression. Case studies are central to this, and these are organised around such themes as the addition of roofs, requalification of space, strengthening and re-use of fabric, repristination, additions, completions, stiffness adjustments, and the correction of past mistakes. The reader is encouraged to examine the technical details of these real projects, and explore the possible solutions. The philosophy of structural interventions is introduced in the context of conservation theories and practices in various European countries. The main types of strengthening, repairs and interventions are explained using different building types, and the structural nature of the main elements to be strengthened (linear structures, frames, plates and shells) is explored in detail. Case studies included cover a very wide range of historic types and conversions, not only monumental masonry structures like neoclassical buildings, major temples, churches, public buildings and museums, but also more utilitarian structures like historic mills, early reinforced concrete structures and vaulting types. This is essential reading for all students of architectural conservation, and practicing architects and engineers who are involved in conservation projects.

This book is a practitioner-friendly approach to dynamics on structural design, oriented to facilitate understanding of complicated issues without their elaborate mathematical formulations. While the chapters follow logically from one another, each one deals independently with a subject in structural dynamics; this approach allows the engineer to go directly to the topic of his or her interest at a given moment.Throughout each chapter the reader will find the text set in two different forms, for different levels of the topic in consideration, which will enable him to postpone for a second reading deeper explanations.Conceived as practical support for engineers whenever they want to review a subject related to dynamics in the practice of structural design, this book can be of great help for students of engineering.

Safety and reliability are important for the whole expected service duration of an engineering structure. Therefore, prognostical solutions for different building types are needed and uncertainties have to be handled. Life-cycle strategies to control future structural degradations by concepts of appropriate design have to be developed, in case including means of inspection, maintenance, and repair. Aspects of costs and sustainability also matter. The Cooperative Research Center for Lifetime-Oriented Design Concepts (SFB 398) at Ruhr University in Bochum combines the wide range of scientific topics between structural engineering, structural and soil mechanics and material sciences regarding structural lifetime management in this present extraordinary monolithic format. The characterization and modeling of lifetime-related external actions of multiple origin are presented in this book as well as the physical description, the modeling and the validation of material degradation. Adaptive numerical methods and simulation techniques are provided for the lifetime-oriented design concepts to forecast material and structural degradation. Stochastic aspects, mathematical optimization methods and interactions between various influences are included. Thus, a solid basis is provided for future practical use and also for standardization of structural design with respect to lifetime-prediction.

This book is a comprehensive presentation of the fundamental aspects of analysis and design of steel structures. It is primarily meant for the undergraduate students of civil engineering and postgraduate students of structural engineering. It will also be immensely useful for structural engineers engaged in design, consultancy and construction involving steel structures. The important theoretical and practical concepts which need to be assimilated prior to undertaking analysis and design—general principles and practices, functional aspects of structures, basic design concepts, alternative arrangements of equipment and service, clarity of structural behaviour, and calculations of loadings on structures—are covered in the first two chapters. The ensuing chapters provide stepwise presentation of the analysis and design procedures for various steel structures and structural elements/members on the basis of Eurocodes and British (BS) codes of practice. The three types of structures specifically covered, on the basis of functional aspects, are scrap yard structures, conveyor structural systems, and turbo-generator buildings. In the Second Edition, analysis and design of steel structures have been carried out based on Indian Standard code of practice IS 800:2007. Every component of the structure comprising the beams and columns is designed in compliance with the code IS 800:2007. A comparison has been made between the results of the steel structures analysed and designed in compliance with EC3: Part 1-1 and those obtained in accordance with Indian Standard code of practice IS 800:2007. The book discusses the various structural analyses and design calculations in an exhaustive manner. The text is illustrated with an abundant number of visuals. Important sources of information relevant to steel structures can be found in the references at the end of various chapters. Audience Undergraduate students of civil engineering and postgraduate students of structural engineering.
