It includes data collected from 1920 to 1996 and reflects the most recent information available on each topic as of 1997. In many cases, the data are shown by race and Hispanic origin (of any race). The samples are drawn from the non institutional population in the 50 states and the District of Columbia and do not include the population of Puerto Rico or the outlying areas. At the end of each section, a "For Further Information" box lists sources of data and a subject specialist who can answer technical questions.
