Contributions to this volume, covering all shores of the Black Sea, draw on a mix of archaeological evidence, epigraphy and written sources to explore the activities and characteristics of those that inhabited or colonised the Black Sea area, as well as those that visited, acted in, or influenced the region, from the archaic to Roman periods.

Les premières fouilles archéologiques furent entreprises à Sinope entre 1951 et 1953. Des travaux ponctuels ont ensuite été menés, mais ce n'est qu'au début des années 90 que Sinope a connu un regain d'intérêt et que l'activité archéologique s'est développée à l'échelle internationale, avec tout d'abord les fouilles des ateliers amphoriques, puis divers programmes terrestres et sous-marins. Les Actes du Symposium international rassemblent les résultats de ces travaux, ainsi que les recherches consacrées à l'histoire de cette ville, depuis sa fondation jusqu'à la période seldjoukide, à ses productions artisanales, à son commerce et à ses relations avec le reste de la mer Noire.

This volume draws attention to the importance of pottery evidence in evaluating archaeological material from Thrace. The volume considers the informative value of pottery in tracing cultural and political phases, by providing us with important data about production centres, commercial relations, daily life, religious rituals and burial customs.

This volume explores the effects of Greek presence in the Iberian Peninsula, and how this Iberian Greek experience evolved in resonance with its neighbouring region, the Mediterranean West. Contributions cover the Phocaean settlement at Emporion and its relationship with the indigenous hinterland, the government of the Greek communities, Greek settlement and trade at Málaga, the Greek settlement of Santa Pola, Greek trade in Southern France and Eastern Spain, the implications of imported Attic pottery in the fifth and fourth centuries BC and the conception of Iberia in the eyes of the Greeks. The Iberian Peninsula invites discussion of key notions of ethnic identity, the use of code-switching, cultural geography and the role of society in generating, developing and exploiting social memory in a changing world. The contributions in this volume provide a variety of responses and interpretations of the Greek presence, reflecting the extent of this debate and offering different approaches in order to better understand the range of evidence from the Iberian Peninsula. The Greeks in Iberia and their Mediterranean Context develops current research on the Greek presence, presenting diverse opinions and new interpretations that are of interest not only to scholars studying the Iberian Peninsula and Greek settlement but also students of identity, cultural geography and colonisation more widely, as well as the applicability of these concepts to the historical record.

The Black Sea in the Light of New Archaeological Data and Theoretical Approaches contains 19 papers on the archaeology and ancient history of the Black Sea region, covering a vast period of time, from the Early Iron Age until the Late Roman – Early Byzantine Periods.
