Camera Palaestina is a critical exploration of Jerusalemite chronicler Wasif Jawhariyyeh (1904–1972) and his seven photography albums entitled The Illustrated History of Palestine. Jawhariyyeh’s nine hundred images narrate the rich cultural and political milieu of Ottoman and Mandate Palestine. Nassar, Sheehi, and Tamari locate this archive at the juncture between the history of photography in the Arab world and the social history of Palestine. Shedding new light on this foundational period, the authors explore not just major historical events and the development of an urban bourgeois lifestyle but a social field of vision of Palestinian life as exemplified in the Jerusalem community. Tracking the interplay between photographic images, the authors offer evidence of the unbroken field of material, historical, and collective experience from the living past to the living present of Arab Palestine.

Excerpt from The Romance of Palestine: A History for Young People, Containing Over One Hundred and Fifty Original Photographs and Pen Pictures of the Castles, Temples, Cities, Mountains, Rivers, Battle-Fields, Classic Groves, Enchanted Gardens and Great People, Which Illustrate the History, Li The eyes of the world at present are turned toward Palestine. The Emperor of Germany is now making great preparations to be present in Jeru salem during the Easter season of 1898. There is a peculiar interest felt everywhere in the development amongst the Jews of the tendency known as Zionism, which found expression recently at the Congress of Jews at Bale, Switzerland, where one wealthy Israelite offered to contribute fifty million dollars for the purchase of Palestine from the Sultan of Turkey. Wealthy in the Western world, poor and down-trodden in the East, the Jews remain a notable factor in the civilization of mankind. If, as seems probable, the Jews of the West help the Jews of the East to migrate to the home of their race, there will be accomplished one of the most startling events in history. Almost every power in Europe has some interest in Palestine, and would be immediately concerned in the migration. In these pages readers will find just the information they want regarding the conditions of the Holy Land to-day in respect to this problem. The land of the Bible remains, and is likely to remain, the most inter esting tract on the surface of the globe. Its history since Abraham moved westward from the Euphrates and settled on the uplands beside Hebron is a grand epic, touching every chord that vibrates in the human breast. Modern biblical scholarship's commitment to the historical-critical method in its efforts to write a history of Israel has created the central and unavoidable problem of writing an objective and critical history of Palestine through the biblical literature with the methods of Biblical Archaeology. 'Biblical Narrative and Palestine's History' brings together key essays on historical method and the archaeology and history of Palestine. The essays employ comparative and formalistic techniques to illuminate the allegorical and mythical in Old Testament narrative traditions from Genesis to Nehemiah. In so doing, the volume presents a detailed review of central and radical changes in both our understanding of biblical traditions and the archaeology and history of Palestine. The study offers an analysis of Biblical narrative as rooted in ancient Near Eastern literature since the Bronze Age.
