This rich collection of essays by an international group of scholars explores commentaries in many different languages on ancient Latin and Greek texts. The commentaries discussed range from the ancient world to the twentieth century. Together, the chapters contribute to the dialogue between two vibrant and developing fields of study: the history of scholarship and the history of the book. The volume pays particular attention to individual commentaries, national traditions of commentary, the part played by commentaries in the reception of classical texts, and the role of printing and publishing. Excerpt from Philip Melanchthon: The Protestant Preceptor of Germany, 1497-1560 By far the larger part of the materials used in the composition of this book were taken from Melanchthon's own writings as contained in the Corpus Rcformatorum. Bindseil's Supplementa and the Wittenberg edition of Melanchthon's works(1562-64) were also used. Besides the other sources of information noted in the margin, the standard Church histories, the Real-Encyclopadie of Drs. Herzog and Plitt, and many pamphlets originating in the memorial year of 1897, were employed. Neither labour nor expense of travel in Germany has been spared in getting accurate information and in ascertaining the opinions of the best and wisest Melanchthon scholars. Celebrations of literary fictions as autonomous worlds appeared first in the Renaissance and were occasioned, paradoxically, by their power to remedy the ills of history. Robert E. Stillman explores this paradox in relation to Philip Sidney's Defence of Poesy, the first Renaissance text to argue for the preeminence of poetry as an autonomous form of knowledge in the public domain. Offering a fresh interpretation of Sidney's celebration of fiction-making, Stillman locates the origins of his poetics inside a neglected historical community: the intellectual elite associated with Philip Melanchthon (leader of the German Reformation after Luther), the so-called Philippists. As a challenge to traditional Anglo-centric scholarship, his study demonstrates how Sidney's education by Continental Philippists enabled him to dignify fiction-making as a compelling form of public discourse-compelling because of its promotion of powerful new concepts about reading and writing, its ecumenical piety, and its political ambition to secure through natural law (from universal 'Ideas') freedom from the tyranny of confessional warfare.
