Stephen Jenkins has chosen for the subject of this volume the oldest and most northerly of the post roads: that over which the first postrider went; which echoed to the war-whoop of the savage, saw the passage of soldiers during the French Wars; beheld the flocking of the minutemen upon the Lexington Alarm, later became the pathway of countless thousands of emigrants on their way to the rich valleys of the Mohawk and the Genesee, or to the fertile prairies of the Middle West. By this route, via New Haven, Hartford, Springfield, and Worcester, a monthly mail was established in 1673, "the first mail upon the continent of America," as the author declares. He traces these pioneer settlements to their present positions as mauufacturing towns and cities.

"The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is undertaking an approximately 3.2-mile-long project to improve Braddock Road (Route 620) from Humphries Drive to Ravensworth Road in Fairfax County, Virginia, in order to address anticipated traffic congestion due to increased vehicular demand, and to improve bicycle and pedestrian access and safety along the corridor. The Area of Potential Effects (APE) is the area with potential for direct and indirect effects to cultural resources. In 2021, on behalf of the VDOT, Commonwealth Heritage Group (Commonwealth) conducted a cultural resources survey of the approximately 175.5-acre APE (Goode et al. 2021). In 2022, Commonwealth conducted supplemental archaeological investigations on behalf of the VDOT to address revisions to the direct effects APE which was revised to approximately 176.5 acres at that time (Goode and Goode 2022). In 2024, on behalf of VDOT, Commonwealth conducted a second supplemental archaeological investigation to address additional revisions to the direct effects APE, which was revised to approximately 177.2 acres, based on concepts dated October 19, 2023."--
