This book deals with nearly twenty years of Peruvian foreign policy towards a region which, to national policy makers, at first seemed inaccessible due to the predicament of its geographical distance. It highlights the impact of the political system and of the economic situation in Peru on the foreign policymaking process towards Pacific Asia in order to detect the obstacles and chances of Peru's relationship with the region.

Peru stands out among Latin American countries as an example of successful economic reforms over the past decade. This comprehensive look at Peru's economy traces that country's journey from a debt crisis in the 1980s to having buffers in place that allowed it to emerge unscathed from the global financial crisis. The book examines the steps Peru undertook to achieve these results and extracts lessons to be learned. Chapters are written by IMF staff and Peruvian economists.

Until the late 1980s, Japan was the only country in Asia with notable political and economic relations. Since then, however, several Asian nations have perceived growing links with the Latin American region as a means of diversifying their political and particularly economic relations while many Latin American decision-makers have increasingly recognised the strategic importance of East Asia in their foreign policy and foreign economic policy designs.
