Persia Revisited by Thomas Edward Gordon The Persians, as a people still nomadic in their habits, and much given to long pilgrimages, have good knowledge of the ways and means of making a journey pleasant. Their saying, 'Avval rafîk, baad tarîk' (First a companion, then the road), is one which most travellers can fully appreciate. Accordingly, when planning a trip in the autumn of 1895 to the Land of Iran, I cast about for a companion, and was fortunate enough to meet with two friends, both going that way, and who, moreover, like myself, had previously journeyed in Persia. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. . Within a year of the Shah's visit to Europe, Sir James W. Redhouse, a well-known British Orientalist scholar had published a translation of the Shah's Diary. The present volume is a reprint of the original edition first published in London in 1874. It remains a document of nineteenth century social history which records a vanished world of European imperialism and industrial and technological change, a world where monarchs behaved with greater decorum and discretion than nowadays.

But, as personal narratives, they are written in the plain, unvarnished style of the private gentleman, much as any one of us may have used in letters sent home to gratify, inform, or amuse friends. If the pages of the Diary, however, are thus entirely void of all the stramed ornamentations of diction supposed to be inherent in all oriental compositions of literature, they are, on the other hand, brimful of enthusiastic expressions of the varied feelings called forth by the beauty or novelty of the scenes or manners witnessed, and by the genuine gratification derived from the splendid and cordial reception everywhere experienced.
